We currently have straw bales stacked against the wall of the house. They use the straw to get up to the window to my craft room to beg for treats. When I'd open the window Trouble would come right in & perch on the back of the chair that backs up to the window to eat treats & get petted.
She will be greatly missed.

Sad day today. One of our little bantams died during the night. Trouble was the biggest & one of the sweetest birds in this batch. She was the big fluffy one who was black with beautiful white markings. Never got a picture of her by herself, but will post a pic of the group.

9" of snow collapsed the frame of our little bantams' enclosure. Fortunately, the little house inside the enclosure was undamaged & all our little birdies are fine. Bantams fly really well & have no problem reaching the 12 foot top of their enclosure. We'll be working on repairing that ASAP!

Turned out that we were mistaken about who was 1st to start laying eggs. It was Angel, our all white hen. Sterling was often in the penthouse or at the top of the ramp watching while Angel was on the nest. Midwife? Just curious? Don't know, however, as of this morning, we have a 2nd hen laying.
The new egg is more oval & less pink than the others. It's the 1 on the bottom left. Until we actually catch a hen on the nest we're not making any guesses as to who it is. I'll keep you posted.

We got our first egg from our little flock of bantams.
We're pretty sure it's from Sterling since she's the one who regularly hangs out on the upper floor of their house. I call it the penthouse.
Here's our little surprise between 2 extra large eggs from Eggland.

Finally got him crowing.hey've been moved to a bigger box in the garage. We bought a hen house kit, which Gary's started painting. Once all the pieces are all painted we can put it together & they can finally go outside. We just have to wait for the weather to cooperate.
Anyway, here's our little roo who still has no name.

Our little rooster was just learning to crow. Of course, as soon as I started recording, he stopped crowing.

Tractor Supply had a 1-day sale on baby chicks last Sat. I picked up 8 bantams. I'm pretty sure I have at least 5 hens out of the 8. Kind of hard to be sure because they're from at least 2 different hatches. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I see we've had a lot of previews and visits to this page lately. Our medical issues have continued, so we're still not back up & running yet.
If we can get a handle on these issues, then over the 2017/18 winter we'll be prepping to resume production, at least on a small basis. I'll try to do better at keeping you folks updated on our little homestead.
Please check back with us to see what, if any, progress we've made.
Hope everyone has a wonderful & safe holiday season.

My sweet old pet rooster Pet-Pet died last week. He was 7 1/2 years old. We were down to only him and 4 Buff Orpington hens, who are 6 1/2, when 1 died. Something found her & had started eating her. She'd had at least 1 stroke, was totally blind in 1 eye, partially blind in the other, and was getting pretty gimpy, so her death wasn't really a surprise. Pet-Pet was guarding the remaining 3 terrified hens when we went out to put the birds to bed. A few days later we found him dead and the 3 terrified hens huddled in the house. He was killed while protecting his Laydees. Now I don't dare let the Laydees out of their house, and we'll have to come up with a totally enclosed run to keep them safe. I miss that sweet old roo every day.

It's been almost 2 years since my last post. I'm gradually getting back my strength and stamina, so I'm planning to start a small group of 10 laying hens and 15 meat birds in Feb. If that goes well, I'll add 25 meat birds in April.
After being laid up for the better part of 5 years, there's a lot of work to catch up on. Il keep you posted on my progress.
