Our roots in Frederick go back to 1848. For generations, Keeney & Basford Funeral Home has been a part of this community, and we’re honored to share our history with you.

The Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, P.A. was founded in 1848 by John Garrison Etchison as M.R. Etchison and Son. Over the years, the business operated at several locations in downtown Frederick, including East Patrick Street and North Market Street, before moving in 1939 to its present home at 106 East Church Street.

The building, known as the Trail Mansion, was built in 1852 by Col. Charles E. Trail and remains a beautiful example of classic Italianate architecture. Its elegant entrance, Italian-style windows, marble fireplaces, and elaborate ceilings reflect the style of 19th-century European estates.

For nearly 125 years, the Etchison family owned and operated the funeral home. Upon the retirement of A. Hart and Marjorie Etchison in 1971, ownership passed to Frank R. Smith, Donald M. Fadeley, Robert W. Keeney, and Richard C.C. Basford.

In 2007, long-time employees Rick Graf and Keith Roberson assumed ownership of Keeney & Basford, leading the funeral home with care and dedication until 2022.

Keeney and Basford Funeral Home is the longest, continually-operating facility and funeral home in Frederick County.

Did you know that, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? Thanks to advances in early detection and treatment, survival rates have improved significantly. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we stand in support of survivors, those currently fighting, and we remember the loved ones we have lost to this disease.

Interesting Funeral Fact: Bela Lugosi was a Hungarian-American actor best remembered for his portrayal of Count Dracula in the 1931 classic film Dracula. When he passed away in 1956, his wife and son buried him in the Dracula cape worn in the film to honor the legacy of his most famous role.
