It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community of the passing of our beloved friend and community member, Inge (she/her), affectionately known as our “Trans-ma”. She passed comfortably in her bed at home alongside her son, Andy, who she loved dearly.
Inge was an avid member of our Worth the Wait and adult transgender support group, and embodied the theme of Worth the Wait with her lived experience as an 84 year old transgender woman who navigated gender transition throughout the last decade. She was proud to be a prime example that it is never too late to be yourself, to come out, and that it is certainly worth the wait. Inge held our hands during difficult support group meetings. She opened her heart to us and was regaled in her storytelling. She devoted her time at the Center to ensuring that each individual in the room has a member of their chosen family cheering them on and believing in them. For many of us who felt as though we lost our families after coming out, Inge was our family. She was our mother, our grandmother, and the matriarch of our community. Inge always, ALWAYS gave the best hugs, which were often sorely needed and treasured. Inge loved music, especially hymns, and was never seen without a book in her purse. Inge was a proud transgender and Scottish woman, and her heritage was extremely important to her.
Inge will be missed and remembered for her immense love and unconditional friendship, which carries on in her legacy throughout the Maryland LGBTQ+ community. Inge’s memory lives on every time we talk about the matriarch of our support group, our beloved elder trans woman who fought internal and societal battles to be her truest self alongside us.
We are grateful for the time we were lucky enough to spend with Inge. We will love and remember her always. Rest in Peace, Inge, our transma 🏳️⚧️❤️
