In this Caregiver Chats clip, caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson explains why transparency matters—especially in blended families. Many family caregivers make promises with the best intentions—pledging never to move a loved one into a care community or assuring them they can always move in.

But as caregiving expert Jennifer FitzPatrick shares in this episode of Caregiver Chats, those promises are often made without a full understanding of what advanced conditions like Alzheimer’s or mobility loss will truly require.

Jennifer encourages families to revisit those commitments with clarity and compassion. A more realistic and supportive promise might be:
“I will make sure you receive the best care possible.”

While moving in together can be the right choice for some, it is not universally the “most loving” option—and reframing the decision can help reduce guilt, improve family dynamics, and lead to better care outcomes.
