The outbreak of Covid-19 in the country over a year ago has put a strain on the livelihoods of Liberians, especially the less fortunate and including people living with disabilities.
The recent surge in cases has exacerbated the economic constraints of Liberians further—making the observance of the nation’s 174th Independence Day celebration to have come at a wrong time for many families.
Despite this challenging time, a Charity Organization named Delivering Good Health Community Services International has ensured that some less fortunate Liberians have smiles on their faces this festive season.
DGHCS on Tuesday provided food rations to the Old Folks Home in Buchanan few weeks after local media report of food shortage in the home.
The Group also reached out to the Local Office of the Christian Association of the Blind, a home of over 70 visually impaired provided them rice and vegetable oil.
The Old Folks thanks DGHCS for the intervention they consider as timely. The Old Folks smilingly mentioned that their major priorities include daily food and health care but also pointed out to the group to further assist in the building of a prayer center for them where they can meet regularly to intercede for God divine intervention and worship Him for His goodness.
“This is a moment we can pull together, and now is the time to think and care for others. Now is the time to express social solidarity and demonstrate humanity,” the Executive Director for DGHCS Madam Nallie Brumskine Moore in her telephone interview after her team donation activities in Buchanan.
“Food is a necessity, as absolutely essential in terms of life-saving and our major concern is to provide food ration to people with special needs this Independence Day to enable you celebrate with your families without any worry about food in the home,” Mrs. Moore added, “we are aware that the Day will not be happily observed if essential needs for you are not met.”
The welfares of vulnerable people, especially food aid, is critical and must be treated at all time with urgency, the DGHCS Executive Director said in her statement.
“Today, we are happy to share food ration with you as we celebrate this year Independence Day amidst of COVID-19,” she expressed, adding “this comes from the backdrop that we are aware that as Liberia 174th Independence Day approaches, difficult times become even harder for many People with special need, least able to access food, and most impacted by loss of income.”
And this year it's only been amplified further by the effects of COVID-19 which is having a deep impact on the community. “COVID is not just a global health crisis; it touches every aspect of our lives, creating socio-economic hardship and further worsening existing humanitarian needs,” she said.
While the Delivering Good Health Community Services is promoting and supporting healthcare services, Madam Nallie said her organization is prioritizing and critically looking at other essential needs including the provision of food assistance and providing Health Care support to people who cannot afford and are extremely in need of medical assistance.
The DGHCS team also visited the Liberian Government hospital and paid the medical bill of a mother whose child got burned two days ago and was taken at the hospital to seek medical care but do not have sufficient money to access the full treatment.
The mother of the four years old girl thanked the DGHCS team for their timely intervention.
Mrs. Brumskine Moore has expressed delight over her team intervention but said her organization, DGHCS is forever grateful to its donors and partners who continue to render assistance and offer support enabling it to reach out to Liberians in need of help.
In separate remarks, the beneficiaries lauded the team for thinking about them, noting that the assistance would not have come at a better time.
