I recently spent some time in Chicago. While I was there, I chose to step onto "The Ledge," a balcony comprised of three layers of half-inch laminated glass suspended 1,353 feet above the city on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower. πŸ™πŸ˜³

103 floors up, standing on glass, looking straight down...Yep, I felt it - that unmistakable, visceral rush of anxiety. 😨 I’m not particularly afraid of heights, but sometimes my anxiety manifests physically when the ground is very, VERY far away. I chose to lean in...quite literally.

As a psychologist who specializes in exposure-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I spend my days helping children, teens, and young adults be brave enough to face their fears, because we learn something powerful when we move toward what makes us anxious. We learn that we can handle it. πŸ’ͺ

PS The views were sooooooo worth it! πŸ™Œ

The Frederick community showed up last night to support the Mental Health Association of Frederick County (MHA)! I'm proud to support this organization and sponsor this important fundraising event each year.

All of the proceeds from the Catoctin Affair are unrestricted donations to MHA. This means that every dollar raised helps people when they need it most.

If you weren't there last night, it's not too late to ensure MHA’s mission continues to make a difference.

Grief is a time traveler.

Thanks to What's Your Grief for providing such an accurate visual.

Grief doesn’t move in neat stages. It can show up in the present (your day-to-day life), reach back into the past (memories, regrets, longing), and hit you in the future (milestones, fears, what will never be). And sometimes it all shows up at once.

If you’ve been thinking, β€œI should be further along,” this is your reminder: you’re not doing grief wrong. You’re experiencing how big grief really is.

Save this for the days you need the reminder.

I was recently invited to speak to parents at New Market Elementary School at their Healthy Minds, Healthy Kids event.

The main takeaways?
πŸ‘‰ The problem is not anxiety. The problem is avoidance.
πŸ‘‰ Avoidance makes anxiety stronger.
πŸ‘‰ Parents can be powerful agents of change.
πŸ‘‰ They/We can do hard things.
