Why movement and therapy? Today, it is accepted that there is a powerful mind-body connection through which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect our health. Movement and walking release brain chemicals that work to decrease feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. Exercise has also been shown to be a powerful anti-depressant. It releases mood-enhancing chemicals which improve self-esteem and decrease perceptions of pain, both physical and mental. Lastly, spending time outside in nature, has a calming effect on the mind and body. Research repeatedly shows a number of positive effects that fresh air, nature, and the outdoors have on our well-being. Our mental and physical health are inextricably connected—let’s work on them both together! Call 240.270.2640 for an appointment or email romayne@offthecouchllc.com.

"Walking is a well-established balm for the mind and body. Research has shown that walking for as little as 10 extra minutes a day may lead to a longer life. And a 2020 study in The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that a 30-minute walk in an urban park reduced the amount of time that people dwelled on negative thoughts. Walking has also been shown to improve creativity and help fend off depression."

No talking. No podcasts. No music. Just some time alone with your thoughts.

Research is increasingly finding links between trauma and other mental health conditions, as well as medical problems, including ADHD in children, OCD, depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and increased risk of substance dependence.

The effects of trauma are far reaching, and there seems to be so much we still don't know how it affects children and adults. The good news is that there is treatment available that can help individuals heal. This type of therapy does not work overnight, but it can allow for the integration of the trauma into one's life.

In these challenging times, it is natural to have feelings of fear, loneliness and overwhelm. Find one person with whom you can share your own worries and feelings. If there is a close friend, family member, therapist or pastor for you to call that you can talk openly and privately, reach out. If you have no one with whom you can seek support, call your local health department and find out how to gain support. You can also contact your local community services phone line such as 211 or 311 and ask for a referral to a support line to discuss how you are feeling. If you need mental health services for depression or anxiety, reach out to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or call 800-985-5990.

We are “part of an orchestra”.

A person is a process of relationships. From this perspective, all our lives are infused with patterns, with relational memories that influence the present and with cultures that offer us interpersonal stories about those relationships.

When you consider yourself as part of an orchestra, try this exercise: Take some time bringing to mind all the relationships you have with the many people in your life. Try to ‘categorize them’: some close, some distant, some historical or current. Which ones ‘define’ who you are? Are you a different person in different relationships? Now think about how or if these relationships constrain you.

Family therapists sometimes say, “It is the people we love who keep us the same.”

Does this apply to you?

These are some unsettling times. Below is a great article from the CDC and some tips to keep in mind.

Things you can do to support yourself:

**Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.

**Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.

**Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.

**Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.

Call your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row.
