This post for a complimentary massage garnered more attention than anticipated, underscoring my assertion that self-care often takes a backseat when life gets in the way. As making therapeutic massage accessible and affordable is a priority for me, I recognize the benefits of massage and am committed to offering services like this.

🐣🌷 Easter Basket Collection Has Begun at Renato’s! 🌷🐣

Our favorite time of year is back — when our dining room becomes a drop-off spot for something really special.

We are officially collecting Easter baskets and basket fillers to support Spreading Smiles and the children we serve.

Last year, this community helped deliver 550 Easter baskets. This year, we’re going even bigger.

You can participate in any way:

🧺 Bring a completed Easter basket (toddler through teen)
🍬 Donate candy or basket fillers
🧸 Drop off small toys, books, stuffed animals, or teen gift cards
💛 Make a monetary donation and we’ll shop for you

https://givebutter.com/marchsmiles

✨ As a thank you, bring in a completed basket and receive a complimentary appetizer or dessert at Ristorante Renato.

We are so proud to be the home of Spreading Smiles and to watch this community show up again and again for local children.

Let’s fill this restaurant with baskets — and fill little hearts with joy.

— The Renato’s Family 💛

Gnna touch on structural, historical, and economic factors that influence access to massage therapy—for both receiving and practicing it. Here are several reasons why massage therapy has been more associated with white and affluent populations in the U.S. and similar contexts:

1. Economic Barriers
Cost of care: Massage therapy is often viewed as a luxury, not a necessity. Many insurance plans don’t cover it, and out-of-pocket costs can be prohibitive for people in marginalized communities.

Income inequality: Systemic racial wealth gaps mean that many Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) have less disposable income to spend on wellness services like massage.

2. Access and Location
Massage therapy businesses are more often found in wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods. This geographic disparity limits access for those living in underserved or historically marginalized areas.

3. Cultural Perceptions and Representation
Wellness industry whiteness: The wellness and alternative health industries in the U.S. have been heavily marketed to and dominated by white people, shaping perceptions of who massage is "for."

Lack of cultural tailoring: Some people from marginalized backgrounds may not feel that mainstream massage services understand or respect their cultural needs and preferences.

Representation gap: There are relatively few massage therapists of color, due in part to barriers like the cost of training, lack of outreach, and minimal representation in school marketing or curricula.

4. Historical and Systemic Racism
Medical mistrust: Centuries of systemic racism in healthcare have caused justified mistrust among marginalized communities, and massage therapy may be seen as part of that larger system.

Gatekeeping in education: Massage therapy schools can be expensive and are not always welcoming or inclusive to students of color. Some may not have access to high-quality career guidance to enter the profession.

5. Licensing and Regulation
State licensing requirements, testing fees, and continuing education costs can be barriers for would-be therapists from marginalized backgrounds.

6. Colonial Erasure of Non-Western Healing Traditions
Many cultures have rich traditions of bodywork and healing touch, but these are often excluded from the mainstream Western model of massage therapy. This can alienate people of color who might otherwise see massage as part of their heritage.

💛 It Starts at Home: Healthy Touch & Growing Athletes

When a child falls and scrapes their knee, what’s the first thing they do?

They run to Mom.
She kisses the boo-boo.
She holds the sore spot.
And somehow… it feels better.

That’s healthy touch communication.

It’s our very first lesson in:
• Safety
• Comfort
• Emotional regulation
• Feeling seen and cared for

That gentle hand on a sore knee isn’t just sweet — it tells the nervous system, “You’re safe.”

Now fast forward a bit...

Did you know teenage athletes’ bodies are still growing — and that growth can actually increase their risk of tightness and injury?

Growing Pains*
During adolescence, bones often grow faster than muscles and tendons. This can lead to:

✔️ Tight hamstrings & hip flexors
✔️ Knee pain (like Osgood-Schlatter)
✔️ Heel pain during growth spurts
✔️ Shin splints
✔️ Muscle strains

✨ Adolescent sports massage is designed specifically for growing athletes.

As children grow, healthy touch evolves — it becomes:

• A reassuring hand on the shoulder
• A post-game hug
• Guided stretching
• Professional, age-appropriate sports massage

Adolescent sports massage continues that foundation of care:
• Supporting recovery
• Reducing tension
• Improving flexibility
• Helping manage stress and performance pressure

Recovery isn’t just physical. It’s relational.

If your middle or high school athlete is training hard this season, let’s support their growing body the healthy way — rooted in safety, communication, and care.

🗣🗣🗣Why I Have a Zero Tolerance Policy—and Why It Matters

Massage therapy is a powerful form of healing. For over 18 years, I’ve had the honor of helping people manage pain, stress, trauma, and reconnect with their bodies. I opened my clinic during COVID with a vision: to create a safe, inclusive space where every body is respected and cared for—regardless of gender, race, size, ability, or identity.

But here’s the truth: for centuries, massage has been misrepresented and misused as a cover for s*x work. Because of this, legitimate massage therapists—are often subjected to inappropriate questions, solicitations, and unsafe working conditions.

This is why I have a zero tolerance policy for creeps and inappropriate behavior. My work is therapeutic and professional. If you don’t understand or respect that, this is not the space for you! 💯

And here's something important: s*x work is real work. The stigma and criminalization of s*x work directly harms massage therapists by blurring the line between two very different professions. When s*x work isn’t respected, it creates a culture where people feel entitled to treat all body workers as objects, rather than professionals.

Supporting the rights and dignity of s*x workers helps everyone—by creating clear distinctions, reducing harm, and allowing massage therapists to work without fear of harassment or violence.

Thank you to my clients who respect my work and support this vision of care, safety, and community.💛👐

Today .fxbg I SUPPORT THE GIRLS awarded us for participating in the bra drive last year. In the next few weeks we will be doing another drive for feminine hygiene products- if you'd like to help us, please come by the shop and drop your donation off in the bin. Periods don’t stop for homelessness… or domestic violence, or natural disasters, poverty or pandemics.

78% of .fxbg financial support comes from individuals who donate. People with disabilities are often some of the most invisible, marginalized populations overlooked by mainstream society. We can help change that by working together. 💪 💓
