Children may grind their teeth for a few different reasons. Sometimes it’s related to growing and developing teeth, a bite that’s still changing, or even everyday stress. Occasionally kids may wake up with a sore jaw or complain that their teeth feel sensitive.

The good news is that many children outgrow this habit on their own as they get older and their teeth continue to develop. Still, it’s a good idea to mention it at your child’s dental visit so we can take a look and make sure everything is healthy and developing properly.

At Burns Family Dentistry, we’re always happy to answer questions and help you keep your child’s smile healthy and comfortable as they grow.

Gum recession happens when the gum tissue around your teeth starts to pull back or wear away, exposing more of the tooth or its root. This can make your teeth look longer and may lead to increased sensitivity, especially to hot and cold temperatures. Gum recession can occur for several reasons — aggressive brushing, gum disease, to***co use, or even natural aging — and often develops slowly over time.

Because the exposed root surface is softer than the tooth’s crown, it can be more vulnerable to decay and irritation. That’s why it’s important to catch recession early and address the underlying cause. Maintaining good oral hygiene, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and seeing your dentist regularly can help protect your gums and prevent further recession.

If you’re noticing sensitivity, longer-looking teeth, or changes at your gum line, let’s talk about it — your smile is worth protecting.

In a medical setting, your treatment is performed by licensed professionals who understand facial anatomy, muscle movement, and proper dosing. That means safer care, thoughtful planning, and results that look natural—not overdone.

At Burns Family Dentistry, we take a conservative, tailored approach. We focus on enhancing your features while keeping you looking like yourself—just refreshed. When precision and safety matter, experience makes all the difference.

If you feel a sharp twinge when you drink something cold, eat sweets, or even breathe in chilly air, you’re experiencing dental sensitivity. It’s common—but it’s also your teeth’s way of telling you something may need attention.

Sensitivity can happen when enamel wears down, gums recede, or a tooth has a small crack or cavity. When the protective layer of the tooth becomes thinner, the inner layer (which contains nerves) is more exposed—making hot, cold, or sweet foods feel uncomfortable.

The good news? Sensitivity is usually treatable. The key is figuring out the cause so we can recommend the right solution—whether that’s a special toothpaste, fluoride treatment, or addressing a deeper issue.

Fun fact! National Tooth Fairy Day is celebrated twice a year. Once on February 28th and again in August.

The Tooth Fairy we know today started gaining popularity in 1908, when a Chicago Tribune article suggested that parents tell their children about a fairy who would leave five cents under their pillow for every lost tooth.

The idea was simple—turn something that might feel a little scary into something exciting. While it didn’t take away the discomfort of losing a tooth, the promise of a small reward helped make the experience feel a lot more fun than frightening.
