Conventional medicine typically treats immune challenges as black-and-white: you either have a named condition or you don’t. This binary view can overlook early warning signs like low energy or joint pain. Functional medicine, however, maps how interconnected factors—like gut health or toxin exposure—gradually shift your body’s defenses.

Myth: Autoimmune diseases appear suddenly

Reality: Many autoimmune conditions develop gradually over months or years.

Early signs like joint pain, digestive issues, or skin changes might seem unrelated at first. Pay attention to your body's whispers before they become shouts.

Living with autoimmune disease is like watching a puzzle slowly come together - except the pieces aren't always clear.

Many of us experience fatigue, brain fog, and unexplained pain long before a diagnosis.

Your symptoms are valid, even if they don't fit neatly into a textbook definition.

The other day I saw a post shared that was meant to bring awareness to Autoimmune Disease. It was meant to help people have compassion for those who struggle with AI. But it lacked hope. Let me tell you there IS HOPE!

If you struggle with an Autoimmune Disease, please know that you CAN feel better. Most doctors will not tell you how because they are focused on treating the condition with the much-needed medications. But there are positive steps you can take to get better! Don't choose hopelessness - choose life.

I am offering a class in February to address anyone living with an Autoimmune Disease as well as anyone who just wants to feel better. Maybe you are fatigued, have joint pain or muscle pain, or are having trouble losing weight. This class is for you too!

The misconception about Autoimmune Disease, is that we think we have an illness of the thyroid, or skin, or joints, or whatever organ is affected. But the problem is our immune system, the organ is simply the victim.

You can strengthen your immune system, feel better if you have an autoimmune disease, or turn your health around if you are on the path to developing an immune disease.

The other day, I heard one of the saddest statements I have ever heard from a client: “My body is against me.” It broke my heart. It literally brought tears to my eyes. If we’re being truthful, lots of people feel that way. It seems that no matter what we try—whether it’s to feel better, l...

If your young daughter is having period pain, PLEASE don't put her on birth control pills to regulate that. Birth control pills have been linked to enhanced intestinal permeability (leaky gut) especially with long term use. And sometimes this is coupled with an NSAID pain reliever such as Ibuprofen, which can also contribute to leaky gut.

Leaky gut can result in serious problems with intestinal health as well as food sensitivities. It's just not worth the risk.

You have heard of Melatonin and it's part in regulating our sleep. But have you heard of Adenosine? This is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that builds up throughout the day, creating natural sleepiness. Then when you sleep it is purged. If you have inadequate sleep adenosine levels can remain elevated and cause drowsiness.

Caffeine suppresses adenosine effects by binding to adenosine receptors, blocking its action. But adenosine continues to build up. That is why the caffeine helps give you energy - it is blocking the action of the adenosine. However, when the caffeine wears off you will have a bigger crash and feel the need for more caffeine.

When you overuse caffeine in this way, the brain increases adenosine receptors, which can cause you to have even more sleepiness leading to caffeine addiction.

4th and final tip for Eating Hygiene to help with good digestion and feeling good after a meal.

Don't drink too much during a meal. When you consume large amounts of liquid, including water, during a meal, you dilute the acidity of your stomach acid and slow down digestion. This can actually cause some malnutrition, especially B12, magnesium and iron. It is best to hydrate between meals. If you are thirsty before a meal try to drink that glass of water 20 minutes before you eat. Of course it is fine to sip water during a meal to help with getting food down.

Tip #3 on Eating Hygiene to help alleviate gas and bloating and feeling tired after a meal -Prioritize Eating

This simply means to stop everything else you are doing and sit down to enjoy your meal. Don't multitask. This is hard to do because we all have crazy schedules. But try to do this as much as possible. Start with just dinner if you need to. Your body needs oxygen to properly digest your food. Relax and savor your meal.

Eating Hygiene Tip #2
(remember #1 was to Slow Down)

#2 is Chew
Sounds kind of simple but the truth is that chewing is the only part of your digestion you have complete control over. The less we chew our food the harder our digestive system has to work. This creates post-meal fatigue. Ever feel tired after a meal? By chewing your food until it is almost liquid you will reduce gas and bloating and also increase post-meal energy.
