Chronic tension and bracing are common trauma responses. They aren’t signs that something is wrong with you. They’re signs that your nervous system learned how to protect you.

In somatic work, we don’t force the body to relax. We offer it experiences of safety through slow movement, pauses, and choice. Over time, the body remembers how to soften on its own.

If you notice tight shoulders, shallow breath, or a sense of always being “on,” let this be an invitation. Move slowly. Pause often. Notice what happens after the movement. That space is where repair begins.

You are allowed to soften. You are allowed to take your time.

My word for 2026 is presence.

Presence in my own body. Presence with others. Presence in the quiet moments where nothing needs fixing.

Choosing a word can be a gentle somatic anchor. It gives the nervous system something steady to return to when life pulls us into rushing, bracing, or disconnecting.

If you feel called, I invite you to choose a word for this year and notice how it lives in your body. You might write it somewhere you’ll see often, place it on your desk or mirror, or pause to breathe with it when you need grounding. Let it be a reminder of where you’re going and how you want to feel along the way.

If you’d like, share your word or what led you to choose it in the comments. I’d love to hear what’s guiding you this year.

Here’s how we’re gathering for January 11–17 as we continue exploring Play & Exploration as a way to unwind old patterns of effort and perfection:

🌿 Morning Soma Yoga
Monday & Wednesday | 10:00 am

🌿 Gentle Soma Yoga
Monday & Wednesday | 11:45 am

🌿 Tranquil Soma Yoga
Monday | 5:00 pm

✨ New offering beginning this week ✨
On Tuesday at 11:00 am, I’ll be helping teach a FREE Embodied Prayer Yoga class at St. Barnabas Church.
This class is held weekly by a small group of teachers so it can remain accessible and consistent. For the first class on January 13, we’ll all be teaching together.

This practice is gentle, inclusive, and open to the public — a space to connect, release tension, and explore prayer through the body. I’ll note the dates I’m teaching directly on the calendar as we move forward.

If your body is craving softness, curiosity, or a way to move without performing — you’re welcome here.

Many of us learned that staying safe meant performing, holding it together, or getting it right. That wasn’t a flaw. It was your nervous system doing its best to protect you.

Over time, that constant effort can leave the body tight, tired, and stuck in stress patterns. This month in soma yoga, we’re exploring another option. Through gentle, playful movement and accessible somatic tools, we create space for the nervous system to soften, unwind, and reconnect with ease.

Let your mat be a place where curiosity replaces self-critique and movement becomes a resource for repair. You’re invited to join me this month and explore what’s possible when the body feels safe enough to play.

🧘‍♀️ Classes are open — schedule yours anytime with the link in my bio

January always invites reflection for me. As a somatic yoga teacher, I see again and again how many of us enter a new year already holding tension. Bracing. Trying to do it right. So this month, I’m inviting you to consider your time on the mat as an act of care. A place where you don’t have to perform, push, or prove.
Here’s how we’ll be gathering in January:
🧘‍♀️ Morning Soma Yoga
Mondays & Wednesdays | 10:00 am
A grounding, accessible practice to gently wake the body, support mobility, and build nervous system resilience.

🌿 Gentle Soma Yoga
Mondays & Wednesdays | 11:45 am
A slower, deeply nourishing class focused on rest, regulation, and subtle movement for healing and support.

🌙 Tranquil Soma Yoga
Mondays | 5:00 pm
A calming evening practice designed to help you unwind, release the day, and settle your system before rest.

⛪ A new offering beginning January 13
About once a month, I’ll be helping teach a FREE Embodied Prayer Yoga class at St. Barnabas Church on Tuesdays at 11:00 am.
This class will be held weekly by a rotating group of teachers, and for the first class on January 13, we’ll all be teaching together. Then I’ll be solo teaching the next class on 1/20. This is a gentle, inclusive space for healing, connection, and embodied prayer. All are welcome.

If your system is craving softness, play, or permission to explore…
I would love to welcome you.
What if this month, instead of trying to do it perfectly,
you allowed yourself to simply play and explore?

I’m deeply honored to be featured on the January cover of Fredericksburg City Lifestyle magazine! This cover marks a chapter in my own somatic healing journey.

Years ago, my relationship with my body was shaped by effort; by pushing, performing, and overriding signals in order to keep moving forward. Somatic practice invited something different: listening. Slowing down. Letting the body lead.

Being featured on the January cover of Fredericksburg City Lifestyle feels meaningful because it reflects a growing conversation about trauma-informed care and nervous system education in our growing community. And it’s featured not as something abstract, but as something lived in real bodies, every day.

This work continues to shape not only how I teach, but how I live. I’m grateful to be part of a community that values nervous system care, trauma-informed movement, and wellness that’s accessible. Thank you to everyone who has practiced alongside me, trusted this work, and made space for these conversations to grow.

With so much gratitude —
Alison 🤍

The holidays may be winding down, but I’m still giving my nervous system a little extra time to land. 🤍
I’ll still be out December 28th – January 4th, and Good Foundation will be closed all week, which also means no TranquilSalt class this week. My 11:45am class at Blossom Yoga will still be held, and I’m so grateful to have Evelyn subbing and holding that space with care while I’m away.
This season is a good reminder that our practice doesn’t only live on the mat. It lives in the choices we make to regulate, to pause, to soften, and to return to ourselves — especially in moments of transition.
I’m taking this time to rest, reconnect with family, and gently orient toward the new year. We’ll return to the mat together next week, with space for curiosity, play, and exploration as we step into January.
Thank you for your understanding, your flexibility, and for being such a supportive community. I’ll see you soon. 🤍

This week, I want to pause and honor the teachers who make this work possible. 💛

One of the greatest gifts of being part of a yoga community is knowing that when one of us steps away to rest, learn, or tend to life, others step forward with care. I’m deeply grateful for the wisdom, presence, and heart that Shelby Perkins and Evelyn Washburne bring to the mat — and for the way they support this community when I’m away.

Their classes are offerings in their own right — rooted in experience, attunement, and genuine care for those who walk through the door.

If you practice with them this week, know you’re being held with intention and skill.

• Hatha Yoga — Monday at 10:00am with Shelby Perkins (Good Foundation)
• Gentle Yoga — Monday at 11:45am with Evelyn Washburne (Blossom Yoga)

12/19/2025

This is where Soma Yoga really shows its strength.
When you practice nervous-system awareness, grounding, orienting, and gentle breathwork regularly, your body learns to:
• settle after activation
• create internal boundaries
• stay present instead of spiraling
• come back to center even when family dynamics feel big

You don’t have to be unaffected by the holidays… you’re human.
But you can teach your body how to stay with you, soften sooner, and not get swept away by stress or old patterns.

Keep using the tools: orienting, grounding through your feet, lengthening the exhale, softening your jaw, and returning to present-moment cues of safety.

You’re doing better than you think. 🤍
