Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in Children: What Parents Should Know 💡 ❄️

As the days get shorter and we spend more time indoors, some children may experience noticeable changes in their mood, energy, and behavior. Seasonal Affective Disorder, often called SAD, is a type of seasonal mood change that can happen during the fall and winter months when there is less daylight.

In children, SAD may show up as ongoing tiredness, changes in sleep, low motivation, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or less interest in activities they usually enjoy. These changes are not a reflection of behavior or effort; they can be connected to shifts in daylight, routines, and the body’s internal clock.

The good news is that supportive daily habits can make a meaningful difference. Regular sleep schedules, daily physical activity, time outdoors when possible, balanced nutrition, and consistent routines all help support emotional well-being during the winter months. Open conversations with your child about how they’re feeling can also help them feel supported and understood.

If mood or behavior changes seem to last more than a few weeks, begin to affect school or daily life, or raise concerns for you as a parent, your child’s pediatrician can help assess what’s going on and guide next steps.
