The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This is when most children have a mix of permanent and primary (baby) teeth, allowing orthodontists to effectively assess the development of teeth and jaws.

This early orthodontic visit is primarily for screening and monitoring rather than immediate treatment. The evaluation can detect potential problems such as crowding, bite issues (crossbites, deep bites, open bites), jaw alignment irregularities, and habits that might affect dental development. Early detection may lead to interceptive treatment that guides proper jaw growth or prevents more complicated issues later, which can reduce the need for more extensive treatment in adolescence or adulthood.
