Today marks the one year anniversary of the opening of our Freeport clinic location at Helix Pelvic Health! I am feeling immensely grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have come with taking the leap into business. It has been inspiring to meet the breadth of practitioners and business professionals working alone, together, to establish a network of support for Maine families. I am honored to have joined this supportive community of healers and leaders. Stay tuned for the BIG news at Helix Pelvic Health as we embark on our journey into 2022.

“Genius starts with the abs Max!” - This is one of my all time favorite movie quotes and it served as the inspiration for this holiday post. With so much emphasis in the fitness world on the aesthetics of our abdominals, I thought I’d share a little bit about the true magic of this muscle group… their FUNCTION!!! Highlighted here are 5 reasons to be grateful for your abs and all that they do even after that 15th Holiday cookie dipped in eggnog (yummm). Wishing you all a wonderful week of holiday adventures!!

That’s why and and I have teamed up for Core, Pour, & Floor: Pilates exercises + pelvic floor education to reduce hip and pelvic pain and improve core strength- we’ll even talk about better s*x while enjoying a clean-crafted wine tasting.

Going barefoot helps kids with development of their feet including the arch. Additionally, it provides wonderful proprioceptive input for both adults and children!! Foot strength and stability along with balance (which comes in part from foot/ankle proprioception) help in maintaining a good distribution of forces on the pelvic floor. This is needed for optimal pelvic muscle length tension relationships and alignment.

Happy Friday! This week we lost our trusted friend, keeper and companion. In his honor I wanted to share a few ideas for exercise with your canine friends to improve mental, physical and emotional health with mindfulness of the pelvic floor.
1) Give your pet a hug and take 3 cleansing breaths into your nose, out your mouth with a “haaa” to down regulate and relax the pelvic floor. 2) Going on a walk or jog with your canine is an excellent way to build strength and endurance and regulate stress hormones. At Helix Pelvic Health we often work with clients on gait mechanics and hip stability to balance forces in the pelvic floor. This is an excellent opportunity to practice your techniques. 3) If prolapse, leakage or urgency get in the way of your motivation to go for a walk, pelvic floor PT can help!! As a quick tip try contracting and relaxing your pelvic floor muscles 3-5x every 2 min to “wake them back up” while you are on a walk. 4) During Pregnancy it is generally recommended that you walk 30min/day 5days a week. Take your canine workout buddy along for the adventure!

Alternating flexion and extension of the spine can help stimulate the intestinal pump or “peristalsis.” Adding breath helps to coordinate the diaphragm with the pelvic floor.

Yes, this posture is recommended for kids as well!! Many of the potty seats that are separate from the toilet such as the baby Bjorn toilet, best establish this posture for toddlers. If you are using a removable toilet seat, make sure to use one with foot support that helps the child achieve this position.
