Throwback Thursday: In celebration of Black History Month, we reflect on the Freedom House Ambulance Service, a pioneer in prehospital care.

Founded in 1967, Freedom House was staffed primarily with black men and women who were trained as paramedics. Before this, America's EMS system consisted of firefighters offering basic first aid, or police officers transporting patients to the hospital in their patrol cars.

The ambulance service served the communities of inner-city Pittsburgh until 1975 when the city took it over.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many EMS providers spent days or weeks away from their families. Sleeping on a cot at the station became the norm for some crews who spent their waking hours on the front lines.

Help us honor the commitment, service, and sacrifice of our Nation's active EMS providers who are working during this pandemic to ensure the safety of others.

Throwback Thursday.

Throwback Thursday: This photo of Times Square in New York City is from 1907, the first year of the famous New Year's Eve Ball Drop. Since then the crowds have grown, reaching up to a million people.

This year, for the first time in decades, Times Square will be closed to the public. Instead, frontline workers and their families will be honored with spots near the stage. (www.nytimes.com)

EMS personnel provide coverage to this and countless other special events throughout the year. As we reflect on 2020, let us remember their Commitment, Service and Sacrifice.

EMS Memorial Monday: A member of the FDNY-EMS Ceremonial Unit leads a procession into Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City for a NEMSMF memorial service during EMS Week, 2014.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”
For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon

Throwback Thursday: During World War 1, the community of Abertillery, Wales, came together to fund a field ambulance, the St. John. This photograph shows members of the 130th St. John Field Ambulance group, one of three units raised to support Lloyd George's Welsh Army. The 130th served from December 4th, 1915, until the end of the war.

Due to Covid-19, Thanksgiving dinner will be different for most of us this year. One thing that remains the same is the Commitment, Service and Sacrifice of our Nation's EMS providers, many of whom will be eating their holiday meal between calls.

EMTs and paramedics are on the front lines 24/7/365.

The National EMS Memorial Foundation wishes you and your loved ones a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
