this week revisits the late 1970s, when Washington Hospital faced overcrowding. With the urgent need for expansion, the community responded by approving a bond measure to fund a vital six-story wing. Thanks to strong local support, the hospital expanded to meet the region’s rising health care needs with resilience and heart.

Fremont native and medical oncologist Jasmine Huynh, MD, joins the UCSF – Washington Cancer Center in Fremont, happily returning to her hometown. She specializes in GI medical oncology, administering chemotherapy and coordinating cancer care for cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, colon, and re**um. She will also focus on growing the center’s clinical trial program because “clinical trials are especially good for many of the cancers where standard options aren’t great. I’m happy to be treating patients in such a diverse and grateful population,” she says, underscoring her commitment to shared decision-making and meeting patients’ cultural needs.

Congratulations to Jing Hu, Staff Nurse II on 4 West, our August Employee of the Month. Jing began her journey at Washington Hospital in 2020 as a dialysis nurse and has since demonstrated exceptional growth, adaptability, and commitment to patient care, transitioning to inpatient medical-surgical nursing on 6W and 4W, completing charge nurse competency, and supporting postpartum care in the Birthing Center. A 2023 DAISY Award recipient, she brings a global perspective from training in Beijing and Australia, and is recognized for going the extra mile for co-workers and patients, leaving a lasting impression through dedication and kindness.

this week is a celebration of a major milestone at Washington Health, which is the dedication of a new hospital wing as part of the $9.3 million expansion. By the time of the ceremony, the facility had grown from a 99,000-square-foot hospital with 156 beds in 1968 to a 238,000-square-foot medical center with 305 beds, one of the 20 largest in California at the time.

This distinguished honor shows that we adhere to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies, built on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding recommended by WHO and UNICEF for optimal infant feeding support in the precious first days of a newborn’s life. We’ve been designated Baby-Friendly since 2013.
