Supporting Children with Delayed Speech
Children with delayed speech can thrive with a little extra support from parents and caregivers! Here are some simple strategies to help your child develop their speech and language skills:
✨ 1. Celebrate Progress – Give specific praise to encourage confidence, like “I like the way you said that!”
✨ 2. Be Patient – If you don’t understand your child, ask for a repetition. And if that doesn’t help, kindly ask them to show you what they mean.
✨ 3. Own the Communication Breakdown – If something’s unclear, take responsibility, saying, “I wasn’t listening well” to ease any frustration.
✨ 4. Set Up Success – Introduce familiar topics (like their favorite toy or a fun outing) to get them engaged in conversation, especially with new people!
✨ 5. Model Correct Speech – Instead of correcting mispronunciations, gently model the right word right after. (“You’re right, that’s a duck!”)
Remember, patience and positive reinforcement can make a huge difference! We have a handout for you: https://linktr.ee/cslotweb
