Emotional Avoidance. What in the world is that?!

It's more than just something your therapist will look for during session.

Maybe you can recognize that you do one, or all, of these. If so, you may be unwilling to "feel your feelings". Tough to do that sometimes! But if you learn your avoidance techniques, you are on your way to process those feelings in a healthy way.

What started as a simple idea—a few of us local mental health therapists getting together to talk about work and life—has turned into something truly meaningful.

We weren’t sure if it would be a one-time thing. But something clicked. Since then, we’ve continued to meet regularly, and it’s become something we truly look forward to. These conversations have been grounding, energizing, and deeply supportive. They remind us that even though we each practice independently, we’re not alone.

What’s the most meaningful is that there’s never been a sense of competition in the room—only collaboration, mutual respect, and shared purpose. We refer to one another, consult with one another, and celebrate each other’s growth. Each therapist brings a unique lens, and when we put our heads together, we’re better able to serve our clients and our broader community.
We believe that when therapists support each other, everyone benefits—especially those we serve. We’re proud to be part of a professional community where connection and care are valued just as much as clinical expertise.

Not all members of our group are pictured here, but each one plays a special part!

Here’s to growing together.

Boundaries.
It is one of the major topics taught in counseling.
It is one of the major topics discussed in pop-psych.

Why?

Because boundaries are healthy. But they can be very confusing when feelings are interpreted as negative or if they feel intense. Guilt and shame are leaders at confusing the mind and the body.

Need help figuring out your guilt? Shame? Boundaries? Call Pivot today to schedule an appointment. 419-658-9989

A lot of people will go to counseling for advice or answers on how to solve a problem. However, that's not what healthy therapy does.
Healthy treatment is working with a counselor to calm your nervous system enough to explore more options. Then you can make the healthiest choice for yourself.
Want to work with a counselor? Call Pivot to schedule an appointment. 419-658-9989

Have you sat in a session and cried a little, or a lot?

And then gone home and thought about how your counselor "didn't even hand over a tissue"?!

There are reasons why counselors don't hand over the tissue box, but rather leave the tissues within reach!
(And yes, there are a few times that a counselor will provide the tissue too...)

Regardless of tissues being handed or not, unconditional positive regard should always be given.

Words. They mean a whole lot.

Ever have something you say hurt someone's feelings? Ever beat yourself up over something little?

There is power in words.

When you shift the way you speak to yourself you allow your nervous system to activate in a calm place which then allows your brain space to make connections and grow. Pretty neat, huh? It's your own personal super power.

Have you ever tried to use constructive criticism? Or maybe you're truly concerned about someone and you speak up about what they're doing.
But it all goes wrong?! You are not alone.
If you correct a behavior but lack connection with the person, the person can feel rejected and lash out!
Connection moves our nervous system to a place of ventral, "connected or calm". It is then that defense mechanisms are lowered and correction can be heard.

Have you ever yelled out of frustration?
Cried at a commercial?
Belly laughed at a joke?

Every one of those behaviors was an attempt to regulate your nervous system. Yes, even laughter.
Our nervous systems want to be in a ventral state most of the time and our bodies will do what it takes to regulate. Not all behaviors are well accepted by those around us. What story is your behavior telling you?

Want to learn more about your behavior story? Call Pivot today. 419-658-9989

We've probably all heard, "stay positive" when we are hurting, but did you know that might not be sound advice?
Clinically speaking, positivity can be too much and fall into an unhealthy level. Pop psych calls it "toxic positivity" and there is truth behind it!

So, next time you're trying to comfort someone, remember it's okay to just sit with them in the uncomfortable feelings. Uncomfortable feelings don't need to be fixed, they need to be felt!

Do you struggle remembering things? How about starting something you know needs to be done? Angry outbursts? All of these are pieces of executive functioning.
A healthy, regulated, nervous system will allow healthy, balanced executive functioning. When we lack control of these things we may want to check our regulation.
(Remember the goal is not to be regulated 100% of the time!)
If you would like help navigating executive functioning coping skills and or regulation, call Pivot today. 419-658-9989
