October 9 is World Sight Day, a global reminder that eye health matters at every age.

Did you know that more than 2 billion people around the world live with vision impairment or blindness and nearly half of these cases could have been prevented with proper care? Regular eye exams help detect issues like glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetic eye disease before they cause permanent vision loss.

This World Sight Day, take a moment to remind family and friends about the importance of vision care. Regular checkups can catch problems early and protect sight for the future.

By the end of October or early November 2025, a new FDA-approved prescription eye drop called Vizz will be available in the U.S. Vizz is designed to temporarily improve near vision, often starting to work in 15–30 minutes, with effects lasting up to 6–10 hours.

It is not a cure and results may vary, but it may provide another option beyond reading glasses or contact lenses.

At Capitol Eye Care Center, our doctors will be offering Vizz as soon as it becomes available. Call us to schedule an evaluation and find out if it’s right for you.

Love your morning coffee?

Many of us love starting the day with a big cup of coffee. While caffeine can give you a boost, too much may leave your eyes feeling dry or irritated since it can reduce tear production.

Balancing your coffee with plenty of water helps keep your eyes hydrated. And if dryness continues, an eye exam can help determine the best treatment to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.

Some eye conditions, like nearsightedness or lazy eye, can run in families. That’s why it’s important to go beyond a quick pediatric screening and have a full eye exam for children.

At Capitol Eye Care Center, we recommend starting eye exams around age 3.5 and up. For younger children, a pediatric optometrist is often the best choice. Early detection means we can address vision problems before they affect learning, development, or confidence.

The FDA just approved Stellest eyeglass lenses in the U.S., the first proven lenses to slow myopia (nearsightedness) progression in children.

Today’s authorization brings to market a treatment option that may meaningfully reduce the likelihood of severe eyesight issues later in adult life. Some studies suggest 50-70% slowdown. This is a big step forward in protecting children’s vision for the future.

We don’t have all the details yet, but more information will be available soon.

Phones and tablets are part of everyday life, but they can also leave eyes feeling tired, dry, or strained, especially as we get older. This is called digital eye strain and it’s one of the most common complaints we hear from patients.

The good news? Small changes make a big difference. Taking regular screen breaks, adjusting brightness, and wearing glasses with the right prescription and specialized coatings can help keep your eyes comfortable.

Capiitol Eye Care Center doctors recommend regular eye exams. Annual exams are important, since they allow us to check not only for vision changes but also for age-related eye conditions that can be easier to manage when caught early.
