✨ Breastfeeding and bottle feeding both feed the baby —
but the mechanics are different.

At the breast, baby creates a vacuum seal and uses a wave-like tongue motion (cupping, extending, elevating) to draw milk out. 🤱
With a bottle, milk can flow faster, so baby may rely more on compression and less on that coordinated suck → swallow → breathe rhythm. 🍼

Different mechanics = different oral-motor demands.
And that’s where feeding-savvy OT makes a huge difference. ✨

As an OT trained in infant oral-motor development, I look at:
👉 Tongue cupping + elevation
👉 Lip seal (not “biting/gripping” the ni**le)
👉 Jaw stability and comfort
👉 Rhythm of suck → swallow → breathe
👉 Whether baby is working efficiently — not over-working or fatiguing

When babies learn efficient oral-motor patterns:
🌿 Feeding feels easier and calmer
🌿 Less gas, gulping, leaking milk, or fatigue
🌿 More connection, comfort, and confidence for both of you

If feeding feels stressful, messy, or like baby is working too hard, you don’t have to push through it.

🌊 Tummy Time the Right Way (and Real Life Too!) 🌊

When I work with babies with torticollis, tongue tie, or plagiocephaly, I use the TummyTime!™ Method, a developmentally based approach created by Michelle Emanuel OT. It’s about more than just “time on the tummy” — it’s about supporting regulation, connection, and functional movement patterns. 💗

Ideally, we want babies to practice tummy time on a flat, firm surface to promote head shape symmetry and postural strength.
👉 But as you can see here, sometimes we start with creative modifications to meet a baby where they are. This one isn’t the best setup for long-term tummy time, but it’s a good way to begin!

Every baby’s journey is unique — especially those working through muscle tightness, oral-motor challenges, or head shape differences — and that’s where skilled guidance matters.
