September signals back-to-school season and the official start of fall, but it can also bring a wave of allergy and asthma flares. As the weather shifts and routines change, it's essential to stay ahead of common triggers that can make this month challenging for individuals with allergies and asthma.
Dr. Aminian shares these helpful tips to keep you breathing easy this September:
🍂 Ragw**d is in the air. Ragw**d pollen peaks in September and is one of the most common triggers for fall allergies. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days and rinse off after spending time outdoors.
📚 Back-to-school allergies. Dust mites, classroom pets, and chalk dust can all spark symptoms. Make sure children have updated allergy and asthma action plans in place and medications ready to go.
🏈 Asthma and fall sports. Cooler air and increased activity can lead to flare-ups. Use a rescue inhaler as directed before physical activity and let coaches know about your child’s asthma.
🕯 Fall scents can irritate. Candles, air fresheners, and even pumpkin-scented cleaners may trigger symptoms. Choose unscented or hypoallergenic options whenever possible.
If fall allergies or asthma are interfering with your daily life, schedule an appointment with Dr. Aminian to get back on track with a personalized treatment plan.

After-school activities are always fun for children to participate in. The extra exercise helps them stay strong and healthy, and they get to spend extra time with their friends.
However, those who suffer from asthma may have a harder time. Here is what to do if your child has asthma and is in after-school sports:
1. First, make certain that the child is sure they want to participate and are aware of the risks.
2. Then, proceed to inform their coaches of their asthma and to make sure the child always has their inhaler.
3. Let the coaches know to give the child a break if they ask it.
4. Double-check that the school nurse not only has an extra inhaler for the child and that they will be on campus for the after-school activities.

Dr. Aminian shares a few late-summer tips to help keep your symptoms in check:
🌾 Grass and w**d pollens are still active. Keep windows closed, especially in the early morning, and shower after spending time outside.

Heading off to college is exciting, but if you have allergies or asthma, there’s more to pack than just clothes and books. Planning ahead can help you stay healthy in your new environment.
Here are six tips to help students manage symptoms while away from home for the first time:
📋 Meet with your allergist. Make a plan and get referrals near your school if needed.
💡 Understand your insurance. Know how to access care and refill prescriptions.
🙋♂️ Advocate for yourself. Let roommates and staff know about your triggers and emergency plans.
🧼 Keep it clean. Dorms can collect dust and mold, so use covers and filters and ask about A/C.
🍽 Know your food. Inform dining staff of allergies and ask about ingredients.
⚠️ Stay aware. Avoid anything that impairs your ability to recognize a reaction or risk.
Don’t let allergies or asthma disrupt this exciting new chapter. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Aminian before school starts and take control of your health this school year.
