It's time for our Saturday Spotlight, where we get the chance to highlight one of our amazing volunteers! This month, we are honored to share a short interview with one of our event volunteers, Dorrenda Thomas!
Get to know Dorrenda below:
What is your role at Hinds Hospice, and why do you volunteer?
I began partnering with Kathy Cromwell and Angel Babies over 21 years ago while working at Aetna. I started with fundraisers like the Aetna Idol talent show, where employees performed and we charged admission to raise money for Angel Babies.
Later, I volunteered for the Angel Babies Walk and created the Kids Zone to entertain the kids while parents took time to reflect and honor the memory of their children who passed. The kids' zone includes a cake walk, carnival-style games, and prizes.

I love to serve — it is my passion.
Do you have any hobbies?
I’m an avid Barbie collector — I have over 200! I love live music and going to concerts.
If you were to thank one person for helping you become who you are today, who would it be? My Mom. She taught me to help others because someone always has it worse than you think. She reminded me that you never know when you’re entertaining an angel.
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do?
I would open a home for the homeless, and I’d create a product to sell that would help sustain the home.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Jesus Christ. I would thank Him for dying for our sins and for blessing me so I can bless others.
What three traits define you?
My faith. My grandkids. My sense of humor — I make myself laugh all the time!
At what age did you become an adult?
I’m still not an adult…
