Veterans Home of California - Fresno

Veterans Home of California - Fresno The Veterans Home of California-Fresno is a 300-bed, long-term care facility located on 27 acres in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.

Opened in October 2013, the VHC-Fresno has 300 beds and presently offers Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), also known as assisted living. Early next year the Home will also offer Skilled Nursing. The two levels of care will provide continuity in the lives of residents in a homelike atmosphere of dignity and respect. All healthcare needs, meals, transportation and activities are provided by the Veterans Home of California-Fresno. Residents in the assisted living care area are required to need minimal assistance and supervision with most activities of daily living. Licensed nurses are available at the Home for necessary care. Skilled nursing care is provided to residents on a 24-hour basis by licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants. Skilled nursing residents have greater access to rehabilitation therapies, nursing care, pharmacy management, structured activities and clinical dietary services. A memory care program with this level of care provides a supervised environment for veterans with symptoms of confusion, memory loss, difficulty making decisions, solving problems or participating in conversations. The Veterans Home provides California veterans with a living environment that protects their dignity and contributes to their feeling of self-reliance and self-worth. The nearby City of Fresno offers many cultural and educational opportunities for Home residents to enjoy. Veterans considering assisted living are encouraged to apply. To qualify, you must be a resident of California, age 55 or older (or younger if disabled), and have served honorably. Spouses are also eligible to apply with the Veterans.

On October 18, 2013, the Veterans Home of California-Fresno opened its doors for residents. To celebrate our 12th Annual Founder’s Day, we celebrated with a very special luncheon for our veterans, followed by a ceremony in the courtyard. The ceremony honored some of our staff that have been with the State of California for 20 to 30 years. Then we honored our veterans who have lived at the Home for 11 years. It was a wonderful way to honor staff and veterans alike that make up the heart of this Home.

Nothing screams the end of Summer like a pool party. So the activities team at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno organized this fun filled event for our skilled nursing residents. Everyone got wet, but it didn’t bother anyone because it was so hot. Plus, our veterans loved nothing better than soaking our staff with a water we**ie! It was a wet and wild happening!

Well another Honor Flight trip has come and gone, but the memories for our veterans and their guardians will live with them for the rest of their lives. Sharon and Elvin from the Veterans Home of California-Fresno were overwhelmed with the reception they received. To say thank you to the many volunteers who work so hard to make this trip possible, doesn’t seem like enough. We are all grateful to the volunteers at Central Valley Honor Flight.

There are some extremely talented people who live at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno. That was crystal clear when the activities team hosted an art show in the main lobby of the Home. Staff and residents were invited to look over the works of art and vote for their favorite pieces. The winning art is now on display in the lobby’s Hall of Honor display case for everyone to enjoy.

The Veterans Home of California-Fresno, partnered with Congressman Jim Costa to provide long overdue-due military medals for some WWII and Korea War veterans who live at the Fresno Home. When these men and women completed their service to our country, most of them returned home and went on with their lives, never thinking about medals or recognition. This event provided a long-awaited thank you for their service. Emcee for the ceremony was well-known veteran supporter Paul Loeffler and Congressman Costa was on-hand to present the medals.
