If you are a Black birthing mom, your risk of preterm birth is nearly double that of a white woman. Receiving quality care in a CenteringPregnancy group has shown to flatten the disparity. We are proud to offer Centering to our community.

Glow! How it all began!

The Preterm Birth Initiative- California (PTBi-CA) is a University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) program, funded by Marc & Lynne Benioff, aimed at reducing preterm birth (PTB- babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy) and improving birth outcomes in three California sites: Fresno County, San Francisco, and Oakland. Fresno County has one of California’s highest rates of babies born prematurely, approximately 1 out of 9 births. Infants born too early can experience serious physical and mental disabilities or even death before their first birthday.

Glow! is a demonstration project developed by Fresno State’s Central Valley Health Policy Institute, UCSF’s PTBI California, and First 5 Fresno County in an effort to help reduce the number of preterm births in Fresno. In the group setting, 12-15 women with similar due dates from the same participating practice receive prenatal medical care, risk assessments, share support with other women, and gain knowledge and skills related to pregnancy, birth, and parenting. Pooling women’s time in group care, patients receive 20 hours compared to 2 hours of prenatal care over the course of a pregnancy and are actively engaged in their healthcare. Group prenatal care improves outcomes for both mothers and their babies, Preterm delivery and low birth rates are less common among women who take part in group prenatal care. Women also enjoy the social support in a group environment and build relationships that last long after delivery. In addition to the benefits to patients, healthcare providers report higher rates of satisfaction with the group model over traditional care.

The curriculum used for providing care and education during this project is Centering Pregnancy. This well established curriculum follows the prenatal care guidelines established by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The group setting and curriculum focus on how to have a healthy pregnancy—from stress reduction, safe relationships, healthy eating and physical activity to a successful labor and delivery and beyond. We've also worked with community members and partners to add enhancements to the curriculum that address areas of concern for women and families in Fresno. Glow! facilitators are trained to skillfully guide each prenatal group through this curriculum, while allowing flexibility in the group process. Each participating practice’s clinician co-facilitate to establish a connection and continuity with the practice. Additionally, every effort is made to continue coordination of care with the psychosocial, nutritional and prenatal education components of California’s Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP).

This group prenatal care pilot is taking place at the Lighthouse for Children. This beautiful state-of-the-art facility provides the perfect space for group care and education, along with a private medical examination room, demonstration kitchen, childcare room, and lactation room.
