‘We used to argue because I didn't know. But since his diagnosis, I realise this was all part of his illness.’

In 2014, Kulwant’s husband Baldev was diagnosed with vascular dementia.

‘When I think back now, odd things happened but at the time I wouldn’t have known they were connected to dementia. For example, when we still had the shop, I remember Baldev just giving money to anyone who asked for it!

‘Another time, a bunch of kids threw money on the floor of the shop and while he was focused on picking up every coin from the floor, those kids went to the back of the shop stole all the ci******es.

‘I think people spotted his vulnerability. I think this was a sign that something wasn't right.

‘We didn't really know what to do once he was diagnosed. They don't tell you anything at the hospital and because the changes are gradual, you just carry on coping, as you did before.

‘But two years later, in 2016, Baldev had a big downturn in his illness. He had to have prostate surgery. He faced seven days in hospital which was very unsettling for him. His dementia symptoms went downhill sharply.

‘Our Dementia Advisor has supported us for years and I know I can always ring her. In 2016, she supported me to do things I would never have known about.

‘I don't know if there's a stigma about dementia in the Sikh community or whether it's just a lack of understanding. There is no word for dementia in Punjabi, but we might say “memory problems” instead. Anyone who knows our family, knows about dementia.

‘My advice to people worried about dementia is to go and get an assessment. If the diagnosis is dementia, you will learn how to deal with it. I now know it's not his fault.’
