Doctors face enormous responsibilities. Just putting a decimal point in the wrong place can kill someone. Being a CEO, a parent, all of these responsibilities are no different. Dr. New Sang was able to go onto the Skin in the Game podcast and talk about legacy, especially that of his mother. Dr. Orathai Sangrujiveth. Dr. O has been in Fresno since 1985 and is still treating patients at our Downtown location. Her care for generations of parents in the Central Valley we should all celebrate, as not all doctors have put in the work and care that Dr. O has during the past 4 decades. Thank you, Dr. O! You are one of a kind.

Dr. New Sang was able to go onto the Skin in the Game podcast to talk about his learnings from Stanford LEAD, and how he was able to to expand his business and grow as a leader. A leadership skill he utilizes when counseling parents is listening with empathy, especially when it comes to questions about vaccines, which has grown since the pandemic 6 years ago. Dr. Sang knows, behind vaccine hesitancy lies anxiety, fear, and love, all wrapped up in one. Patient should also remember though, doctors took an oath to do no harm. If we can meet each other half way, society benefits.

Epigenetics is a relatively new field of medicine that looks at how trauma affects gene expression. Turning on or off genes through methylation can control your body's on/off switch for stress hormone release and/or absorption. If you or a loved one has been affected by trauma, whether it was a death in the family, a divorce, a separation from a caregiver, mental health issues, drug or alcohol abuse, all of these stressors can result in chronic toxic stress. I yelled at my family for throwing away moldy bread.

Not my finest moment. But it made me stop and ask: why does this feel like such a big deal?

The answer had nothing to do with bread. It was my grandfather's scarcity. My father's silence around struggle. Absorbed so young it stopped feeling like a lesson and started feeling like me.

That's generational trauma. It doesn't announce itself. It shows up in your kitchen on a Tuesday.

I'm working on it — and I wrote a whole book for the parents who are too.
