Hoping to escape the bitter winters of Chicago, Dr. Orathai Sangrujiveth came to Fresno in 1985, where she set up an office across the street from Fresno Community Hospital. Word slowly leaked out about a new great pediatrician in town, and she was able to attract patients far and wide to downtown Fresno. She has been practicing pediatric medicine nonstop since then. Her three children eventually graduated from Clovis West High School, and dispersed off into many directions. The oldest one, New Sang, went from Los Angeles to Dublin, Ireland, to Honolulu, Hawaii, to the Garden Island of Kauai, and then back again to Fresno. Along his travels, he was able to pick up a degree for doctoring, and became a pediatrician like his mom. He decided to move back to Fresno to stay close to his parents, and raise his children in the family oriented culture of the Central Valley. Together, they form a pediatric clinic servicing the health needs of children from birth to 21 years of age. They give immunizations, health checks, sports physicals, circumcisions, and treat ailments from ADHD to the flu. They have had over 50 years of experience providing health care to the children of the Central Valley.

Dr. New Sang was privileged to be able to work in the NICU at Community Regional Medical Center, Fresno, and help save babies there and at Wilcox Hospital on Kauai. Saving babies is a skill that takes hard work and dedication, just like parenting. If you're interested in hearing the full interview, look for Skin in the Game with Debbie Go. Doctors face enormous responsibilities. Just putting a decimal point in the wrong place can kill someone. Being a CEO, a parent, all of these responsibilities are no different. So it's important to be emotionally regulated in order to make the right decision, and always learn from your mistakes. Letting go of perfectionism leads to greater happiness in life, and happier children. If you're 5 minutes late, you'll be able to have another chance to be on time the next day, so don't punish yourself or others. You'll have another chance.

Dr. New Sang was able to go onto the Skin in the Game podcast and talk about legacy, especially that of his mother. Dr. Orathai Sangrujiveth. Dr. O has been in Fresno since 1985 and is still treating patients at our Downtown location. Her care for generations of parents in the Central Valley we should all celebrate, as not all doctors have put in the work and care that Dr. O has during the past 4 decades. Thank you, Dr. O! You are one of a kind.

Dr. New Sang was able to go onto the Skin in the Game podcast to talk about his learnings from Stanford LEAD, and how he was able to to expand his business and grow as a leader. A leadership skill he utilizes when counseling parents is listening with empathy, especially when it comes to questions about vaccines, which has grown since the pandemic 6 years ago. Dr. Sang knows, behind vaccine hesitancy lies anxiety, fear, and love, all wrapped up in one. Patient should also remember though, doctors took an oath to do no harm. If we can meet each other half way, society benefits.

Epigenetics is a relatively new field of medicine that looks at how trauma affects gene expression. Turning on or off genes through methylation can control your body's on/off switch for stress hormone release and/or absorption. If you or a loved one has been affected by trauma, whether it was a death in the family, a divorce, a separation from a caregiver, mental health issues, drug or alcohol abuse, all of these stressors can result in chronic toxic stress. I address the issue of Adverse Childhood Events, Epigenetics, Generational Trauma, and more, in my book, Relieving Parental Anxiety, Perspectives from a Pediatrician, on sale now on Amazon. What if the goal isn’t to eliminate negativity—but to **reframe it**?

When we learn to shift negative thoughts into more balanced, hopeful ones, we build **emotional flexibility**. And emotional flexibility helps us respond to life with less fear, less reactivity, and less anxiety.

That matters not just for us—but for our children.

**Less anxious parents often raise less anxious children.**
When children see calm, grounded adults working through stress with resilience, they learn to do the same.

That was the heart of my recent TV segment—and it is also a central message of my book, ***Relieving Parental Anxiety***.

If you want practical insight on how to reduce anxiety, heal old patterns, and create a calmer emotional environment for your family, my book is now available on Amazon.

I yelled at my family for throwing away moldy bread.

Not my finest moment. But it made me stop and ask: why does this feel like such a big deal?

The answer had nothing to do with bread. It was my grandfather's scarcity. My father's silence around struggle. Absorbed so young it stopped feeling like a lesson and started feeling like me.

That's generational trauma. It doesn't announce itself. It shows up in your kitchen on a Tuesday.

I'm working on it — and I wrote a whole book for the parents who are too.
