Caregiving can be stressful, especially for
family members caring for their loved ones.
Our services offer solutions to bring you
peace of mind.

Senior Home Care
Most seniors prefer to stay in their own homes.
Our services promote dignity and independence to
individuals to enable them to live in their home with
assistance. Our caregivers provide the necessary
care to maintain daily routines and do some of the
things they have enjoyed in the past with a little
help from an Angel.

Respite Care
Family caregiving is a big commitment, and often
takes an emotional and physical toll. Sometimes
family members need to take a break from their
caregiver role to address their own personal needs.
Respite care (short term care) is available for families
who need just a few hours or few days to recharge
and return with a fresh perspective.

Transition Care
If you are being discharged home from a facility, we
can make your transition less stressful. We’ll assist
you to return safely to the setting you call home.
We have provided services to many of our families
for years and we work hard to establish long lasting
relationships with everyone involved.

We Are There for You
We provide a complimentary, no obligation
consultation. Our independently owned and
operated franchised homecare office staff are
trained to run comprehensive background
screenings on every caregiver. This includes state,
county and federal district court searches.
We pride ourselves on matching the needs of
your loved one with our caring and compassionate
caregivers.

Talking To Your Loved One 🏵

How do you help your love one keep their
independence without interfering in their
life or making decisions for them?
These are difficult topics to discuss with your loved
one. Many older adults reject this advice because
they perceive it as a threat to their independence,
autonomy and identity. They may not understand
the relevance, believing ‘I’m not there yet’, or feel the
advice is patronizing. With advanced planning and
straight-forward discussions, the home care process
can add significantly to everyone’s peace of mind.
Family Meeting
Setting up a family meeting can be a great place
to begin. Prior to having your loved one attend the
meeting, it’s wise to have the family discuss care
to allow everyone the opportunity to get on the
same page.
The support of a family meeting alone may be
enough to convince them that they should consider
some form of home care before their health
deteriorates. Remember, your job is to help them
make decisions, not to make decisions for them.
After the initial family meeting, gently suggest they
make an appointment with their physician for a
thorough evaluation. This professional evaluation
can go a long way in helping them decide that they
could use assistance in their home.
Have a Plan
Even with the most thought out and well planned
family meeting, resistance from your loved one is
normal. If your loved one’s health and/or safety are
at issue, say so, and push the discussion forward. You
can also involve others, such as clergy, physicians or
a geriatric care manager.
Moving Forward
Let your loved one know you are concerned about
their health and safety. Being direct will ease the
discussion of having a home care agency come to
their home and meet with them. This will allow your
loved one to get a sense of exactly what such an
agency can do for them.

Visiting Angels Can Help Seniors With Balance Problems
Improving balance through exercise can help your senior remain independent for as long as possible. However, if your older adult is experiencing challenges with balance and wants to age in their own home, one-on-one assistance from a qualified personal care provider can reduce the risk of a fall—especially when navigating the bathroom, stairs, or outdoor spaces.
A Visiting Angels caregiver can be by your loved one’s side to assist them when getting out of bed or a chair, walking around the home, bathing, or going outdoors. Through its Safe and Steady® Fall Prevention Program, Visiting Angels will keep your loved one as safe as possible by promoting habits and easy home modifications to reduce your loved one’s risk of falling at home.
Contact your local Visiting Angels home care office and learn how the Safe and Steady® Fall Prevention program can help reduce your aging loved one’s risk of experiencing a life-altering fall and keep them safe and comfortable at home. 559-500-2102

TALKING WITH OLDER DRIVERS:

Many Americans have expressed concern
about the safety of a loved one, due to
the growing number of older drivers and
today’s driving complexities. Visiting Angels
can help you start a conversation today.
Senior Warning Signs
Reaction time is one of the most crucial functions to
safe driving, which naturally slows with age.
Here are warning signs to look out for:
• Fresh dents and scrapes on their vehicle.
• Straining to see.
• Stress, confusion or exhaustion from driving.
• Continued close calls while driving.
• You and others aren’t feeling safe as passengers
in the senior’s vehicle.
• Ignoring or missing road signs and signals.
• Braking suddenly without cause.
• Drifting continuously into other car lanes.
• Problems reacting quickly or handling multiple
distractions.
How to Start Talking
Conversations about safe driving can be difficult for
family to have with senior loved ones.
Start with the following steps:
1. Recognize that driving is very important to your
loved one as their primary transportation.
2. Share concerns with other family members
to see if they have made some of the same
observations and discuss how you can help.
3. Have the talk. Continue to validate your senior
loved ones feelings, while calmly discussing safety concerns and potential solutions.
4. Offer help and transport as needed.🚙

Fall Prevention

Falls are the main reason why many older
adults lose their independence. Reducing
the risks of a fall begins at home. Through
education, we can reduce the likelihood
of falls.
In addition to causing a physical injury and
potential hospitalization, falls can impact a
person emotionally and socially. Often, seniors are
hospitalized due to falls each year and a lot of them
need to move to a long-term care facility afterward.
Unfortunately, the fear of falling often causes older
adults to avoid leaving the house, decline social
invitations, and miss important family functions. This
behavior can lead to feelings of anxiety, loneliness,
social isolation, sadness and depression.

Falls Don’t Just Happen!

Falls are usually caused by one or more risk factors.
A risk factor is something that increases a persons
chances of falling. Risk factors may be linked to
a physical condition, a medical problem, or the
home environment. Arthritis, poor eyesight, taking
multiple medications, dehydration, and lack of grab
bars in the bath tub are a few examples of the risks
of falling. By identifying and addressing risk factors
promptly, many falls can be prevented.

Steps to Fall Prevention

Understanding risk factors and implementing fall
prevention strategies are key to avoiding falls.
Ask for advice on senior fall prevention from your
health care provider or a home care agency. We can
implement a fall prevention program to help reduce
risk factors based on an individual’s needs.
Our commitment to invest in educating older adults,
their families, caregivers, and service providers
about ways to reduce falls is crucial for the ongoing
quality of our clients’ lives.

Best Foods to Eat For Your Immune System

Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are packed with vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants and fiber, which help reduce inflammation and support overall immune function.

Fatty Fish:
Salmon, tuna, and other fatty fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help regulate immune responses.

Nuts and Seeds:
Almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are good sources of vitamin E, zinc, and healthy fats, which are all important for immune health

Yogurt:
Yogurt, especially those with live and active cultures (probiotics), can help maintain a healthy gut, which is closely linked to immune function.

Fermented Foods:
Foods like kimchi and sauerkraut, also contain probiotics that support gut health and immune function.

Other Immune-Boosting Foods:
Broccoli, berries, sweet potatoes, garlic, ginger, and mushrooms also offer valuable nutrients and antioxidants that can strengthen the immune system.

Beat the Heat:
Summer Tips
for Seniors

Age Related Risk Factors
Due to normal aging-related changes, older adults
are sometimes unable to recognize when they
become overheated.
Certain health problems may also put seniors at
further risk for heat-related illness. While seniors
with communication impairment may have trouble
expressing heat concerns.
Risks can range from symptoms like cramps, to
more severe health concerns like heat exhaustion
and heat stroke.
Tips to Beat the Heat
Here are a few ways to reduce risks:
• Always avoid direct sun and the heat.
• Always close blinds, drapes & windows.
• Only open windows and doors if it is cooler
outside than it is inside.
• Minimize your activities during the hottest
period of the day (usually 11 a.m.–4 p.m.).
• Eat small meals and avoid fats, proteins, sugars
and especially alcohol.
• Wear loose fitting, light weight clothing.
• Stay in cooler areas of the home using air
conditioning, ceiling or free standing fans.
• Electric lights create heat when turned on, so
do your best to avoid lighting during the day.
• Use cool damp towels on wrists and the back
of the neck.
If you don’t feel comfortable leaving your loved one
alone, seek assistance. ☀️

We started Visiting Angels because we saw a need in our community for this service. We love getting to know our clients and their families on a personal level as we are entrusted to provide the best possible care.
