Warmer weather is great for getting outdoors, but rising temperatures can be tough on your veins.

Heat causes your veins to dilate, which puts extra pressure on vein valves and can worsen symptoms of varicose veins, spider veins, and venous insufficiency. That means more swelling, aching, heaviness, and visible veins during the spring and summer months.

If you notice persistent leg pain, new bulging veins, skin changes, or swelling that does not improve with these strategies, it may be time to see a vein specialist. Early evaluation can catch issues before they become more serious.

Start preparing your veins now so you can enjoy the season comfortably.

Massage therapy can offer temporary relief for the heavy and aching feeling of varicose veins. It is important to know that massage does not fix damaged vein valves. Instead, it focuses on improving circulation and reducing uncomfortable swelling. Gentle techniques like lymphatic drainage are often the safest and most effective choices.

You must avoid deep pressure directly on visible varicose veins. Firm kneading can damage weakened vein walls or cause bruising. Always move in upward strokes from the ankle toward the thigh. This motion mimics natural blood flow back to the heart. Avoid using hot stones or heat, as warmth can cause veins to dilate further.

Manual therapy works best when combined with medical treatments and compression therapy. A physical therapist can help you find the right balance for your specific needs. Professional guidance ensures you support your vascular health without causing accidental harm. Follow our page to be updated on safe alternative therapies and modern vein treatment options.

March is DVT Awareness Month and it is the perfect time to learn about this silent threat. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. This condition can be life-threatening if the clot travels to the lungs. Many people have no clear symptoms until a medical emergency happens.

Knowing the warning signs can save your life. Watch for sudden swelling in only one leg. Look for redness, warmth, or pain that feels like a persistent cramp. Risk factors include long periods of sitting, recent surgery, or certain health conditions. Staying active and hydrated are simple ways to help with blood clot prevention.

Movement is your best defense against a pulmonary embolism. Take short walks often and flex your ankles when sitting for a long time. Compression stockings can also support healthy blood flow during travel. Follow our page to be updated on more essential tips for vein health and safety.

Phlebitis is one of those conditions many people have never heard of until it affects them personally. It refers to inflammation in a vein and can show up as redness, warmth, tenderness, or a cord-like feeling along the skin's surface.

While superficial phlebitis is often manageable, deeper involvement can be linked to blood clots that require immediate medical attention.

Risk factors include prolonged sitting or standing, varicose veins, recent IV placement, smoking, and certain medications.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not wait to get evaluated. Early diagnosis can prevent complications and help you heal faster.

Your sleep position plays a major role in your vein health. Most people do not realize that gravity affects circulation even while resting. Choosing the right posture can reduce swelling and improve blood flow. Left-side sleeping is often the best choice for your veins. This position removes pressure from the large vein that returns blood to your heart.

Elevating your legs can also provide significant relief at night. Try to keep your feet slightly above the level of your heart. This simple change helps gravity move blood out of your lower legs. It can reduce the aching caused by varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. Using a wedge pillow is a great way to maintain this elevation comfortably.

Consistent leg care leads to better sleep quality and less morning discomfort. Small adjustments to your routine make a big difference for your vascular system. Follow our page to be updated on the latest tips for circulation and vein health.

March is officially here, and it is the perfect time to focus on your vein health. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about conditions like phlebitis or vein inflammation. Many people do not recognize the symptoms until they become painful or persistent. Redness, warmth, and tenderness along a vein are common early warning signs.

Preventing phlebitis is much easier than treating it later. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your blood moving. Try to avoid sitting or standing for long periods without a break. Simple ankle pumps and short walks can significantly reduce your risk. Compression stockings are also a great tool to support healthy circulation during travel or long work days.

Maintaining proper hydration helps keep your blood flowing smoothly and prevents clotting. Small lifestyle changes can protect your vascular system from serious complications. Our team is here to help you stay proactive about your vein health all year long. Follow our page to be updated on the latest tips for prevention and wellness.

Is vein inflammation on your radar this March? Discover how to prevent phlebitis before it becomes a problem with these evidence-based strategies.

March is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Awareness Month, a vital time to focus on a condition that is often silent but can be life-threatening. A DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The greatest danger is that a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Understanding your risk factors is the first step in prevention. Common triggers include recent surgery, prolonged immobility (like long flights or desk work), pregnancy, and certain hormonal medications. Even lifestyle factors like smoking or being over age 60 can increase your baseline risk.

The symptoms often appear in just one leg. Watch for:

Sudden swelling
Pain that feels like a persistent cramp or "charley horse"
Skin that is red or discolored
A leg that feels unusually warm to the touch

The good news is that DVT is often preventable. Simple habits like staying hydrated, wearing compression stockings during travel, and moving your legs every hour can make a massive difference. Your calf muscles are essentially a pump for your circulatory system; when you move, you help keep your blood from stagnating.

Standing desks are a popular wellness trend, but when it comes to your veins, the "sit vs. stand" debate is more nuanced than you might think. While sitting all day is hard on your circulation, standing perfectly still for hours can also cause blood to pool in your lower legs, increasing the risk of varicose veins.

The real key to vein health isn't choosing one over the other. It is about movement. Your calf muscles act as a "second heart" by pumping blood back up to your chest, but they only work when you are active. Standing still disengages this pump almost as much as sitting does.

The most effective approach is to alternate positions every 30 to 60 minutes. If you use a standing desk, try shifting your weight frequently, performing subtle calf raises, or using an anti-fatigue mat to encourage micro-movements. These small actions keep your blood flowing and prevent the pressure that leads to vein damage.

Regardless of your desk setup, nothing beats a true walking break. Taking the stairs or a brief stroll every hour is the gold standard for maintaining healthy circulation and preventing leg heaviness by the end of the day.

Our Story

Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center was established in 1990 by Frederick A. Elmore, M.D. At that time, and for the next 13 years, it has been the only full-time vein specialty medical practice between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

The seed was planted in 1977 when Dr. Elmore decided to focus on varicose veins as his special interest. Dr. Elmore became trained in compression sclerotherapy, a nonsurgical method of treating veins, developed in Europe. In 1990 Dr. Elmore decided to devote himself full time to treating vein problems and founded Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center. In 1995 Dr. Elmore introduced the use of duplex ultrasound imaging to treat varicose veins with a procedure called Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. In 2000, Dr. Elmore became the first physician in the Central Valley to perform the revolutionary new procedure ENDOVENOUS LASER THERAPY (EVLT).

In early 2011, Mario H. Gonzalez, M.D. joined the practice. Dr. Gonzalez has been in medical practice as a Board Certified Surgeon since 1989. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of California, San Francisco. He has served as Chief of Staff at Community Medical Centers for the past six years. He decided to devote his practice full time to Phlebology (varicose veins & venous problems) and has joined the staff at Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center. Dr. Gonzalez has since purchased the practice in August 2011. Dr. Gonzalez' vast experience has proven to be an asset to the practice of Elmore Medical.
