If you're a new amputee, you probably have a lot of questions. One of the most common questions we hear is "How soon after amputation will I get back to doing activities that I normally do?"

The answer depends on a lot of things such as the type of amputation, your rehabilitation process, and your overall health and well-being. This month, we're celebrating Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month by answering some prosthetic FAQs.

Q: After getting a prosthesis, will there need to be more appointments and adjustments?

A: Yes! At Capstone Orthotics & Prosthetics, we walk you through every step of your mobility journey—from initial consultation to adjustments years down the road. After getting your prosthesis, we'll schedule a follow-up 2 weeks after delivery, monthly for 3 months, and then every 6 months or as needed.

If you're a new amputee, you probably have a lot of questions. One of those questions may be:

"What can I do to prepare myself for getting a prosthesis?

There's a lot you can do to prepare! Here are the top priorities:

▪️ Work through the feelings and emotions you're experiencing and decide how to approach your life after an amputation.
▪️ Consider visiting with an amputee peer, attending an amputee support group, or working with a counselor or psychologist. These are normal ways of coping with such a major life change!
▪️ Exercise to build the muscles needed for balance and mobility.
▪️ Take care of your residual limb to attain a proper, sound shape.
▪️ Learn body positioning, stretching, and strengthening to maintain muscle tone and prevent contractures.

At Capstone Orthotics & Prosthetics, we believe that obtaining the right orthotic or prosthetic device should be a stress-free and well-communicated process.

We start by scheduling a virtual or in-person consultation. Next, we provide an in-depth evaluation during which a casting or measurement will be performed. Then, we schedule a fitting and delivery appointment. Once you have started using your device, we'll schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that your device is fitting and functioning appropriately to achieve your goals.

❄️ Keep your skin clean and dry to avoid irritation and friction.
