The photo below is of a chinch bug. It is on the finger of my hand to give an idea of its size. Chinch bugs were a significant problem in our area last year. We are offering a new program to help control damage from chinch bugs and other lawn damaging insects this Summer. While not the targeted pests, these treatments will help to reduce flee, tick, and mosquito problems as an added benefit. This program would be three insecticide treatments over the late Spring and Summer. Normally, the cost for these treatments would be the normal surface feeding insect charge. But we are offering discounts if you pre-pay for all three services.

It is time to consider core aeration performed on your lawn. Core aeration is the process of mechanically removing plugs of soil from the lawn to naturally improve soil aeration. It is considered a form of cultivation and has many benefits for a healthier lawn. Benefits of core aeration include:
• Improved air exchange between soil and atmosphere
• Enhanced soil water uptake
• Improved fertilizer uptake and use
• Reduced water runoff and puddling
• Stronger turf grass roots
• Reduced soil compaction
• Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance
• Improved resiliency and cushioning
• Enhanced thatch breakdown
• It may help to prevent fungal disease through better air exchange reduced puddling

Core Aeration can be done at any time of the year, but the spring is the best time to have it done. It should be done before the application of any pre-emergent herbicide because the aeration process will destroy the pre-emergent herbicide barrier that prevents new weeds from growing.

This is a picture of brown patch. This is a fungus disease that is a lawn problem in the Friendswood and League City area due to all the rain we have received. It usually appears as areas that are roughly circular in shape. The circles grow over time. Notice the that the center of the circle is brown but the outer edge is a different shade of brown, almost orange. This indicates the disease is still active. If see patches like this in your lawn please call. We have treatments that can stop the spread of the disease and limit the damage.

Pennsylvania's famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow, meaning we can expect six more weeks of winter this year.

Groundhog Day Fun Facts...

*The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. (Punxsutawney Phil weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long.)

*A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting.

*Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma.
