Dr. Virginia Apgar’s contributions to neonatology have had a lasting and transformative impact on the care of newborns worldwide. In 1952, Apgar developed the Apgar Score, a quick and simple system for assessing the health of newborns immediately after birth. This assessment tool, still in use today, evaluates critical aspects of a baby’s health—such as heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, and reflexes—allowing healthcare providers to quickly determine if a newborn requires immediate medical attention. Despite facing barriers as a woman in a male-dominated medical field, Apgar’s work helped to revolutionize the treatment of newborns and save countless lives. Her advocacy for public health education and her fight for equitable healthcare for women and children continue to inspire today’s healthcare professionals.

Mattiedna Johnson (1918-2003) was a nurse, laboratory technician, and medical researcher whose scientific contributions helped revolutionize modern antibiotic treatments. She played a pivotal role in the development of penicillin and the treatment of scarlet fever, contributing to life-saving medical advancements that benefited millions worldwide. Despite the immense significance of her research, Johnson received little recognition or financial compensation as a result of the racial and gender biases that denied Black women credit for their accomplishments in professional fields.

Beyond her research, Johnson dedicated her life to advocating for equity in the medical field. She played a foundational role in establishing the National Black Nurses Association, an organization that continues to support Black nurses today. Johnson’s legacy lives on as an inspiration for generations of medical professionals, proving that perseverance, talent, and advocacy can drive change even in the face of adversity.

Elizabeth “Libby” Coyte, PA-C, epitomizes the impact that one person can have locally and nationally on improving access to medical care services, especially in medically underserved urban and rural communities. Libby advocated for legislative changes that improved access to medical care through better utilization of PAs [Physician Assistant's] skills and provided PAs representation on important regulatory and health policy agencies.

After graduating from PA school, Libby worked clinically thirty years in family medicine and oncology. In 1988, she joined with her husband, Ed Friedmann, also a PA, to reopen a closed medical clinic in Redfield, Iowa. It was the only clinic in the town. They reopened the clinic after agreeing to serve as its owners and converting it into a federally certified Rural Health Clinic (RHC). Libby assumed the role of office manager and worked there part-time as a PA until 2015; she continues as the clinic’s officer manager today.
