According to the American Lung Association, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin "are the primary carriers of ni****ne and flavorings in e-liquids. Though they are common additives in food and believed to be safe for ingestion, they are also used to make things like antifreeze, paint solvents and artificial smoke in fog machines which are dangerous when inhaled. When heated, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin break down into formaldehyde and acetaldehyde—both carcinogens. Inhaling these chemicals over time may cause inflammation of the airways and damage to lung tissue, which in turn can lead to chronic respiratory diseases."

If you (or your child) tend to think that "everybody" is using cannabis, you'd be mistaken. The 2024 Monitoring the Future survey revealed that most U.S. students have NOT used cannabis in the past year. 92.8% of eighth graders haven't touched it in the past year. 84.1% of high school sophomores (10th graders) haven't used it. And 74.2% of high school seniors haven't used it either.

The risks of cannabis use are high for teens, whose brains are still developing. Talk to your kids. Make sure they know the health risks and help them learn healthy coping mechanisms for life's stress.

According to a recent article from the CDC (cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2025/24_0537.htm), approximately half of all teens spend four or more hours on their screens each day. These teens are likely to get less exercise and less sleep, and are more likely to have weight concerns, depression symptoms, and/or anxiety symptoms. Help your teen find productive, active hobbies. Ensure a good night's rest by turning off the phone and leaving it outside the bedroom.

Many things have pushed the overdose epidemic out of the news. Part of the reason has been positive--there has been a downward trend in overdoses over the last two years. However, there were still over 80,000 deaths in 2024. We cannot give up on this fight. There are three simple things you can do at home to help protect your family from accidental overdoses:

1. Count your pills regularly so you know if any are missing.
2. Lock up your medications.
3. Dispose of your medication using an approved drug disposal system or bring them to a drop box near you. (This keeps the drug from entering our water.)

Today is . We often "hear" things without truly listening. In other words, the sounds reach our brains, but we don't truly process what is said. We acknowledge with a grunt or a vague "uh-huh" because we're distracted by other things such as our phones, social media, work, or daily tasks. Today, try to stop what you're doing and truly listen to those around you. It lets them know they matter to you.

To be able to face life's challenges with an attitude of resilience, your child needs to know that they are loved unconditionally. It is important that you tell your child verbally, "I love you" often--preferably every day! Hearing this helps build a sense of safety and belonging along with the feeling of being loved.

Vapes have been touted as a "less harmful" alternative to smoking. Some people have even used them as a way to stop smoking to***co products. But now studies are beginning to reveal that not only are v**es not "less harmful," but they could be even more harmful than traditional smoking. Dr. Maxime Boidin, an expert in cardiac rehabilitation, has completed the first controlled study into the long-term effects of va**ng, and has expressed alarm over what he found, specifically the damage done to the arteries, which indicates a likelihood that v**e users will develop cardiovascular problems in the future, and possibly even organ failure.

Discuss the risks of va**ng with your kids. Their health depends on it!
