WE ARE SO EXCITED! We had a $15,000 matching gift challenge, and we are thrilled to announce that the challenge has been met! THANK YOU one and all! You are amazing! This was accomplished with a combination of our amazing Pitch Burst volunteers, annual sponsors, and individual donors. You all rock!

Over the past few years, Front Royal Moose Lodge has made it possible for Project COURAGE to continue to serve 80+ students annually. Without their support, we would not be able to serve as many children. We are so thankful for their continued dedication! This fall, they have contributed funds that put us ever closer to meeting our matching gift challenge...we'll have more news on that later!

We are honored to be one of the organizations that this incredible young woman supports. Lauren is an invaluable member of our board, serving as our youth representative! In addition to attending regular meetings, she volunteers at many of our events and has also worked to create/coordinate videos for several of our campaigns. Her insight and dedication have made a huge difference in our work. We will be sad to lose her when she graduates this year!

Secondary Student Spotlight

We are thrilled to celebrate one of Warren County High School's finest, senior Lauren Foltz! Lauren is not only an awesome student but an even better person, and she truly reflects what it means to be a Wildcat!

Lauren’s dedication to excellence shines both in and out of the classroom:

She is a hardworking student and a valued member of our Varsity Volleyball team.

She is an active member of the National Honor Society and the dedicated leader of our Cat Pack!

She is an exceptional mentor, frequently helping younger students who are transitioning from WCMS to WCHS—a kind act she performs without ever being asked or assigned.

Outside of WCHS, Lauren dedicates her time to volunteering through several organizations in the community.

Thank you, Lauren, for your hard work, leadership, and incredible kindness! We are so proud to have you represent WCHS!

Let's focus on lead for minute. The CDC, EPA, and World Health Organization all state that there is no “safe” level of lead in blood — even a tiny amount of exposure can lead to developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and other health problems. Lead-based paint was banned in 1978. So what makes us think it's okay to inhale lead via vapes?

The video is silly, but in real life, reduced coordination is dangerous. It can result in personal injury from falls, burns, etc. If you make the decision to get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of cannabis, serious injury or death is a real possibility--not just for you, but for those around you.

It is important to establish routines and schedules with our kids. It helps create a sense of safety. At the same time, it is important to be flexible. It sounds contradictory, we know. The key is balance. A routine is good. A rigid routine can be stifling. Too many extreme exceptions to the routine can feel like chaos. Ultimately, how rigid you should be depends on your child and their preferences, not on your preferences. Watch and listen for cues from them.

It's National App Day! 📱

Despite our concerns about how AI is intertwining into our children's lives, there are useful apps out there. SAMHSA's "Talk. They Hear You." app is one that can help you empower yourself and your family. Both the "Talk. They Hear You." mobile app and Screen4Success provide valuable resources to start important conversations.

Download the app today and take the first step towards prevention: https://www.samhsa.gov/talk-they-hear-you/mobile-application

The holiday season can be difficult for someone who is in recovery, especially from alcohol use disorder, because triggers are everywhere. Movies feature people drinking alcohol, parties where it flows freely, old friends who are still using drugs making an appearance, difficult memories...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you know someone in recovery, ask how you can support them. Maybe it's hanging out with them when others are at a party, so they don't feel isolated. Maybe it's hosting a sober party at your home. Or maybe it's being a sober partner during a party, so they don't feel like they're the only one not drinking.

We tend to focus on the mental health impact of phones all the time, but phones present some risks to our physical health as well. We are more sedentary because of smart phones, which can lead to obesity and related health problems. Overuse can also cause neck pain, back pain, and conditions such as teen tendonitis (a condition that usually results from repetitive motions in sports) due to repetitive strain from texting and holding your phone. So remember to put down your phone and move! Even if it's not pretty.

It can be difficult to take good care of yourself. We get that. Eating right, getting enough sleep, drinking enough waters--it all takes effort and sometimes it just seems like an awful LOT of work. But remember, you're worth that effort, because you matter. That includes choosing not to damage your brain with cannabis. 🧠 Use healthier coping mechanisms, such as talking with a friend, singing, exercising, reading, petting your cat...the possibilities are endless.

The number of dangerous chemicals in vapes is astounding. Take a look at the uses of some of the chemicals found in vapes:

Benzene – a volatile organic compound found in car exhaust
Acrolein – a substance used in w**d killer
Diethylene glycol – a chemical found in antifreeze
Heavy metals – lead, nickel, and tin
Formaldehyde – a cancer-causing substance, used to embalm dead bodies

Talk to your kids about the risks of va**ng. Help them learn healthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress.
