It is with deep sadness that we share that our colleague and friend, Sandy Rostkowski, Diakon’s Director of Housing, has passed away.

Sandy was known for her warmth, kindness, and the way she made people feel genuinely valued, both within Diakon and in her Scranton community. Through her leadership and compassionate presence, she made a meaningful difference in the lives of residents, families, and co-workers alike.

Many will also fondly remember her dog, Copper, Diakon’s “Chief Happiness Officer,” who, alongside Sandy, brought smiles and comfort wherever she went.

Please keep Sandy’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

We enjoyed hosting the Diakon Housing Services Board at our community last week!

Last week, members of our Diakon Housing Services Board met at Frostburg Heights, our affordable housing community in Maryland. Together with Diakon staff, Board members toured the property, explored how to best support residents in the face of challenges, and exchanged ideas for future growth.

So thankful to have Cynthia here at Frostburg!

Do you ever wonder who contributes to Diakon’s success behind the scenes? Each Monday, we’d like you to meet some incredible people who power our team! ✨

Introducing Cynthia McCutcheon, who is the support coordinator at Frostburg Heights apartments. She has been in this position for 20 years! Located in Maryland, Frostburg Heights provides affordable, equal-opportunity housing.

Cynthia’s favorite part of her job is her residents and our staff. She says, “We are like one big happy family most of the time!”

Cynthia thinks all of Diakon’s values are very important, but “quality” stands out to her. She is a lifelong learner and is part of a cohesive and tight team at Frostburg Heights.

Many people don’t know that Cynthia is also a writer and one day hopes to publish a novel she’s working on.

Cynthia told us, “As someone wisely said, ‘Choose a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life.’ This rings true for me. With 20 years of service that have seemingly flown by, I can attest to the joy and fulfillment my role has brought me.”

Ever wondered who’s behind the scenes contributing to Diakon’s success? We’d like you to meet some of the incredible people who power our team!

Introducing Jeannie Wilson, our Diakon HUD Property Manager at Frostburg Heights in Frostburg, Maryland, for the last three years.

Her favorite part of her job is helping those in need of affordable housing.

The Diakon value that resonates most with her is “respect.”

Jeanne shared, “ALL people are unique gifts of God to be valued. We are all created equal and should get the same respect no matter what path we decide to take.”

Something many people don’t know about Jeanne is that she’s a HOT Wheel Car collector. She and her son often travel to collector toy shows, searching for that one elusive Mustang car to complete her collection!

Jeanne’s favorite quote is, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain.”

Today is National Drive-In Movie Day!

Did you know that the first drive-in movie theater was opened on June 6, 1933 in New Jersey? (history.com) The price of admission was 25 cents per car or per person, with no group paying over a dollar! Drive-in theaters have since become harder to find, going from roughly 5,000 theaters at their max in the 60’s to fewer than 500 today in the United States, but they are still around! Treat yourself to a local drive-in movie this weekend and take a step back in time!
