We let our daughters teacher know that charcoal drawing for Art class gave her the hibigibis like nails on a chalk board. The sound, the texture, the everything… and the teacher accommodated for her to use pencil! Thank you!!!!
We had tacos for dinner tonight.
But my 2 year old? She doesn’t eat tacos.
She has her handful of safe foods, foods that make her feel secure in a world that can already be overwhelming.
So yes, I tossed 4 chicken nuggets in the air fryer just for her.
Two minutes of my time.
That’s what accommodation looks like.
Sometimes it’s not a big overhaul.
Sometimes it’s one small step.
And for our kids, that small step can mean the difference between distress and peace.
October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month.
For so many children (and adults), the world feels louder, brighter, rougher, harder to navigate.
Their brains interpret things differently.. and that’s not wrong.
So instead of forcing them to fit our mold, let’s show them we’re willing to meet them in theirs.
Because when we do, we give them more than just food on a plate, we give them comfort, dignity, and the freedom to be themselves.
