Waiting until your breasts feel full to pump seems like it makes sense. You’d get the most milk that way, right? But actually, the opposite is true.

When your breasts are more full or engorged, your body releases a hormone called feedback inhibitor of lactation (FIL). FIL’s entire job is to signal your body to slow milk production. So the longer you wait, the more you’re working against your supply.

Instead of waiting for fullness, pump before you get there.

If you’re trying to increase or protect your supply and want more individualized support, I work with families virtually anywhere in the world and am in-network with many major insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Cigna, United, and Aetna.

Comment or DM me “INSURANCE” and I’ll send you details on how to check your coverage.

And be sure to share this with a mom who may be trying to protect or increase supply.

If you want to start building a freezer stash without creating a massive oversupply, this one is for you.

The goal here is simple. I recommend to add in one pump per day, (& doesn’t have to be every day!) but wait until after 4-6 weeks postpartum. Before that, your hormones are still regulating, and pumping too early can easily tip you into oversupply territory. Once things have settled a bit, you can start adding that extra session in strategically.

The best time to do it? Right after baby’s first morning feed of the day, and here’s why! Prolactin, your main milk-making hormone, follows your circadian rhythm, so it is naturally highest in the morning. That means you are going to get the most milk out of that session compared to any other time of day.

Here is how it works in practice: say baby wakes at 5am to eat. Nurse babe, and if you both go back to sleep, skip the pump. No need. But when baby wakes again at 7:30 and you are up for the day, nurse babe first, then pump immediately after (or as close to after as possible). Your body will still have plenty of time to replenish for the next feeding, and you will be making the most of that prolactin peak!

A little consistency goes a long way. Even just a few ounces per day adds up fast.

Save this and share it with a mama who is heading back to work or just wants a little milk on hand for date nights and time away from baby.

And if you want personalized support, I am in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, United, and several other plans and would love to support you. Comment INSURANCE to find out if I take yours!

Gentle haakaa reminder for my nursing mamas.

If you’re going to use one, try saving it for what I call the “third side.”

Baby nurses on the left, don’t suction a haakaa on the right.

You can loosely hold it under the right if you tend to leak, just without squeezing it on.

Then when baby switches to the right to nurse, that’s when you can go ahead and pop the haakaa back onto the left if you’re wanting to stash a little milk.

Why? Because we want to feed your baby, not your freezer. And despite what you may have heard, a haakaa does more than “just catch your letdown” when you suction it on. There’s suction there, and it can remove milk your baby may need when they switch sides.

I’ve had situations before where mom had a freezer full of milk, but their baby wasn’t gaining weight appropriately- the culprit? The well intended use of a haakaa! Not all haakaa use it bad- but it’s a tool that should be used with caution.

Tell me in the comments: do you use a haakaa during feeds? What was your experience with one like?

My favorite nursing position is biological nurturing. Or laid-back nursing. Whatever you want to call it, it is my GO-TOwhen I am seeing transfer issues, slow weight gain, or pain with nursing.

Here is why I love it: it gives baby a stable base against your entire body, and it allows them to use the reflexes they were literally born with to latch and feed effectively. Baby-led latching. The way we were designed by our Creator!

To get into position: settle into your chair first. Take a breath. Take another one. Longer on the exhale than on the inhale. Shoulders down, chest open, reclined back slightly or more if that feels better to you. Baby goes tummy to tummy with you, skin to skin, arms up near the breast on either side like they are hugging it. Keep their body symmetrical on both sides.

When you are ready to bring baby to the breast, lead with their chin first. The reflex that tells baby to open wide lives in that chin. Let that contact trigger the gaping response. Then bring baby in to you. Not your breast to baby. Stay reclined and let baby do what they were designed to do!

I hope this position is helpful! Share this with a mom who is expecting or struggling with a painful latch or slow weight gain, and follow along for more tips and tricks!

If you need one on one support, I would love to help! I am in network with many major insurance companies including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, and United!

My least favorite breastfeeding position as a lactation consultant? The football hold.

And here’s why:

When baby is in the football position, their chin gets tucked down toward their chest. That forward flexion makes it really hard for them to open their mouth wide, bring their tongue forward, and actually take a good drink.

Try it yourself right now. Tuck your chin all the way down to your chest. Now try to open your mouth as wide as you can and take a sip of water.

Not easy, right?

So why would we want our babies latching and feeding in that position?

We want baby’s head and neck to be in a more extended, neutral position so their airway is open, their mouth can gape wide, and they can transfer milk effectively.

This one shift can make a huge difference in latch and comfort.

Share this with a pregnant mom or a new mom who might need to hear it, and follow along for more tips/tricks and my favorite position to achieve that nice deep latch we want.

Repeat after me: “My worth as a mother is NOT defined in ounces.”

It also isn’t define in whether you pump or nurse. Or how long you provide breastmilk to your baby for. Or what’s in their bottle.

Share with mom who needs to hear this 🤍
