Constraining your body’s freedom of movement to stay within certain parameters is not how you keep yourself safe from injury. Building your movement vocabulary gradually and progressively over time is how you keep yourself safe.

When receiving manual therapy of various types, it's not unusual to experience periodic discomfort. In most cases, we're able to distinguish between the "good" pain from the "bad" But how? When a manual treatment is exerting a therapeutic effect, it moves the body closer to a state of homeostasis. When this happens, we can sense it. We feel the pain, but we also feel that shift. In the absence of that shift, we're left with only the pain.

A foot stuck in pronation PUSHES your weight to the OPPOSITE side. A foot stuck in supination PULLS your weight to the SAME side. It both are stuck the same way, it basically fixes your pelvis in place. Don't forget to check the feet when addressing body problems elsewhere.

We tend to get the most immediate relief from local corrections, but LASTING results often come from global corrections. This is why I start local to issue and work my way out from there.

I do love the non-obvious cases. I had a client come in complaining of arm and shoulder pain. I quickly traced this back to some rib subluxations in the mid back. I found both rhomboids in spasm. In a bit of a twist, this was traced back to some thickened tissue in the calves. Releasing the calves unwound the whole pattern. Definitely not what I would have guessed, but again, that's why I don't guess -- I assess.

You can have two linked problem areas where each affects the other without one being the CAUSE of the other. Not all linked relationships are parent--child in nature. Some are siblings -- ie. children of the same parents. In these situations, the solution can be found in a third area.

Pain journaling is a common pain management tool. It can help you understand how your daily routines affect your pain and facilitate more productive communication with your treatment team. Pain journaling can include things such as:

1. Date/time of day of symptoms
2. Pain intensity (1-10)
3. Descriptions of pain quality (sharp, dull, aching, etc.)
4. Location and duration of pain
5. Food and drink intake
6. Record your activities when symptoms arise to identify potential triggers
7. Describe mood
8. Changes in type/number of symptoms
9. Recent changes in treatment

What constitutes a proper amount of treatment exists on a bell curve. More is better up to a certain point, then you actually start working against yourself. Don't over treat. Think of it a bit like gambling. If you've done some good work, you'd be wise to take your winnings and leave. Don't just keep playing -- you'll inevitably lose everything.

Nerve pain down the medial arm means ulnar nerve, right? The thing with nerves is they sometimes connect to each other in unpredictable ways. Via communicating branches and anastomoses, one nerve can produce symptom patterns typical of another. A detailed assessment is key in sorting it out.

Some clients are pretty effusive with their positive feedback when they've had a great result during/after a session. Others play it pretty close to the chest. I was seeing a client for hip pain the other day and I had him walking up and down the hallway for a moment after making a key correction. I just saw his eyes widen as he silently mouthed the words "What the f***?" Somehow, that's even more satisfying.

If you tell me you have pain in a particular area, I’m absolutely going to check that area out. Most often, I’m going to find some issues there contributing to your symptoms. Sometimes, the area of pain will feel assess totally normal and the entire solution to the symptom is to be found elsewhere. Most often, it’s a combination of the two.
