Nerve pain down the medial arm means ulnar nerve, right? The thing with nerves is they sometimes connect to each other in unpredictable ways. Via communicating branches and anastomoses, one nerve can produce symptom patterns typical of another. A detailed assessment is key in sorting it out.

Some clients are pretty effusive with their positive feedback when they've had a great result during/after a session. Others play it pretty close to the chest. I was seeing a client for hip pain the other day and I had him walking up and down the hallway for a moment after making a key correction. I just saw his eyes widen as he silently mouthed the words "What the f***?" Somehow, that's even more satisfying.

If you tell me you have pain in a particular area, I’m absolutely going to check that area out. Most often, I’m going to find some issues there contributing to your symptoms. Sometimes, the area of pain will feel assess totally normal and the entire solution to the symptom is to be found elsewhere. Most often, it’s a combination of the two.

A lot of my clients also receive massage from time to time. A word to the wise... Deep tissue massage is DEEP massage... not HARD massage. True deep tissue doesn't use more pressure, they use SLOW pressure -- coaxing the body to ALLOW you to go deeper without more pressure.

Are you dealing with chronic neck and shoulder tension you can seem to touch? Consider the serratus anterior. It's a muscle that depresses and protracts the scapula, and it must move freely to allow scapular retraction. Retraction is key to shoulder extension. If the scapula can't retract, then the shoulder will tend to elevate when you extend, leading to chronic overuse of the upper shoulder and neck muscles. In clinic, I address this a number of ways, including addressing adhesions between the serratus and the neighboring lat and subscapularis. For DIY, consider these stretches... https://www.rfr.bz/fd1f073

"It's never gonna get better -- I've had it for ages!" I hear versions of this all the time. Just because a problem hasn't gone away on its own or after ineffective treatment doesn't mean it can't be resolved with the RIGHT treatment. How long it's been doesn't necessarily matter.

Nerves love three things: movement, blood flow, and space. When they lack one or more, this eventually leads to symptoms, either of the nerve itself or another area forced to compensate.

Don't forget to address ankle mobility for knee pain. The tibia helps form both the knee joint and the ankle joint. The motion at one necessarily affects the other. Here are some ankle mobility exercises/stretches that may be helpful. https://www.rfr.bz/f896ebe

Years ago, I found myself developing some right knee pain. It didn't seem to be in any hurry to resolve itself so I got to work on the problem. I was able to figure out that it was tied with cycling. The more I cycled, the more it hurt. Everything was set up and adjusted properly, though. It occurred to me that I had recently switched out cycling shoes. They were still quite stiff and, as a result, I had developed a blister on my little toe. To take pressure off of it, I was toeing-in inside my shoe while I rode. This was over-engaging my popliteus muscle, causing my pain. The solution? I put a Band-Aid on my little toe. Instant cure!

Any treatment can help if the client is well-positioned for healing. The more internal and external obstacles there are to their healing, the more specific a therapeutic intervention will need to be in order to be effective.

I had a case recently where the client complained of shoulder pain. He had trouble with overhead motion and external rotation. After a bit of assessment, I found that the clavicle was totally stuck. That led me to an inhibited pectoralis major. Searching for a source for the inhibition, I ultimately found an adhesion between the brachioradialis and brachialis. Releasing it freed the clavicle and normalized the shoulder motion. Would I have guessed that the elbow would be responsible for this guy's shoulder pain? It wouldn't have been my first guess. But again, that's why I don't guess, I assess.
