Take a guess at what I would say is the most valuable skill as a doula. Go ahead and type that in the comments; I would love to hear what you think! After you do that, come back and expand the rest of the post :)

Now, that you took a guess (thank you!), here is what I think the most valuable skill (and my most commonly used one is). Quiet. When I am at a prenatal, you will find me listening. I will ask questions and find out the information needed to best support you, but the listening is when I hear what you desire most for your birth. When entering a birthing space, you will find me quietly assessing what support could be most helpful for that moment. Only after the quiet can I best jump in. During feedings, you will find me sitting quietly watching baby's jaw and mama's face. While a lot of my work involves education and hands-on support, this can't be done without the quiet moments.

These bands are something I am so familiar with as a birth doula. They hold the external fetal monitors on. Your nurse will add gel to the monitors, place them on your abdomen, and then secure them with the bands. Most women will get two monitors- one to monitor baby’s heart rate and one to monitor contractions. Did you have these in labor?

A question that I get asked often is “When should I go to my birth location (i.e. hospital, birth center, etc)?” The answer, like most things in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, is it depends! This is definitely a conversation to have with your OB or midwife. There are multiple factors they will consider in giving you an answer, and some of these are
-how far away do you live?
-is this your first baby?
-have you had a precipitous birth in the past (less than 3 hours long)?
-how many weeks pregnant are you?
-are you GBS positive?
Care providers will often start with the 5-1-1 rule, or when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting for 1 minute, and have been this way for 1 hour. From there, they will take your unique situation into account and give you directions. Before you head in, give the on-call line a ring and talk with a provider and make sure to call your doula (if you haven’t already)!

I have a lot of clients ask me about labor and delivery gowns, so here are my thoughts! As always, take the helpful tips you want and leave the rest😊Photo from Mom & Baby Essentials] You may have seen some labor gowns with all kinds of snaps for easy access to ivs, epidurals, etc. Here are things to think about when making the purchase:
1. Are you sensitive to either what fabric is washed in or the feel of fabrics?
2. Birth is messy and you may not want to take the gown home with you. 3. Some people end up birthing naked as birth heightens sensations and anything against their skin can not feel good. For some, a labor and delivery gown is helpful for feeling modest and comfortable when birthing. For others, the hospital gown or a the mesh un**es and sports bra work well. If you have to choose one or the other, I would recommend getting a super comfy robe for your postpartum time in the hospital (pictured is one from Mom & Baby Essentials] ). It is perfect for breastfeeding, great for pictures, and you can use it when you get home too! Did you go to your birth location with a robe or gown? I would love to hear your experience!

Aren't these little rolls so cute?!? While many parents eagerly anticipate their little ones gaining rolls, this is not a good indicator of baby weight gain. So whether or not your baby looks like this, your pediatrician will let you know if your baby has appropriate weight gain. Remember that appearance is NOT a clinical measurement.

What is the golden hour? This refers to the hour immediately after birth. Many hospitals now will wait to take baby’s measurements until after this first hour. The new family gets to bond with less interruption and baby gets to feed for the first time. What did your golden hour look like?
