OUR HISTORY-

Riverview Regional Medical Center has a rich history of serving the citizens of Northeast Alabama. Our story begins in 1917 with the opening of “Gadsden General Hospital”, a four story hospital located on Chestnut Street, built by Dr. J.E. Leach. The Gadsden General Hospital was founded by the Sisters of Divine Providence, a German order of nuns. In 1925 the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity, a group of Catholic nuns, purchased Gadsden General Hospital. These devoted “Sisters,” as they were known, came to Alabama on a mission to provide healthcare to impoverished Alabamians. Under the direction of Father Thomas Judge and Sister Mary Boniface, the hospital rapidly outgrew the 25 bed facility. In 1931, a new hospital was constructed on property from the Moragne family. They named the hospital the “Holy Name of Jesus Hospital,” so that the name of Jesus was glorified each time the name of the hospital was spoken. The 1931 building was an architectural landmark of the time, and aerial views of the structure reveal that it is constructed in the shape of a dove.

We are proud of our heritage, and we are proud to serve the citizens of northeast Alabama.
