Ever wonder what’s actually happening during Reiki?

While the body remains completely still and supported, the nervous system begins to shift out of “fight or flight” and into a parasympathetic, restorative state — where the body does its best repair work.

The practitioner’s hands move gently within the body’s energetic field, sometimes lightly touching you, to help bring awareness and balance to the body’s energy centers. These centers can hold patterns of stress, emotion, or depletion, especially when we’ve been in a constant state of doing or overdrive.

As the energy centers begin to regulate, the system as a whole becomes more coherent. Breath slows, circulation improves, tension softens, and energy can redistribute in a way that feels grounding, calming, and often deeply clarifying.

Melissa often has insightful intuitive messages that come through as well, unique to each person’s journey at the moment.

During or after a session, people often describe feeling deeply relaxed, lighter, emotionally clear, or simply more present in their body — sometimes immediately, sometimes gradually. Reiki creates the conditions for the body to return to balance in its own time. ✨

Anxiety affects the body on many levels, including the nervous system, hormones, energy flow, and muscle tension - and it isn’t the same for everyone.

I find many patients are not used to being asked where they feel the anxiety in their body... But this is really what defines anxiety and allows customized treatment of your specific type of anxiety to aim at treating the root.

These therapies work really well together to create deep, lasting calm and provide maintenance of anxiety once it is well controlled:
🌿 Acupuncture regulates the Heart system, calms the Shen, smooths Liver Qi, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
🌿 Reiki balances energy, grounds the mind, and eases emotional overwhelm.
🌿 Massage releases muscle tension, lowers stress hormones, and supports deeper relaxation.

Each modality helps shift the body out of fight-or-flight and into a state of balance. And when combined, they create a deep, lovely tri-fecta of deep, nourishing, holistic healing for the body, mind and spirit. ✨

Your daily bowel movements are one of the most important signs of your digestive health, acting as a communicator of what is happening internally. And if you aren’t checking out your p**p before you flush, you are missing out on a key window into your health! 👀 💩

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stool patterns reveal crucial information about your Spleen, Stomach, Liver, and overall gut balance.
Loose stool, constipation, mucus, ribbon-like stool, or rapid transit/explosive bowel movements all indicate different patterns and imbalances that can be treated with acupuncture and herbs.

Understanding these signs helps you improve digestion, nutrient absorption, energy levels, skin health, and hormones by making slight lifestyle shifts to rebalance your system.

✨ Your bowel movements are an important vital sign! When you know how to read your stool, you can be empowered in your health and restore balance to feel better from the inside out.

We’re excited to introduce Sarga Bodywork, now offered at the clinic through practitioner-in-training sessions with Jessica High, our LMT!

Sarga is a mat-based bodywork modality rooted in Thai bodywork and modern fascial principles. Using deep, sustained pressure and slow, flowing movements, it encourages the fascia to soften and release — supporting deep relaxation, mobility, and nervous system regulation.

We’re thrilled to offer something so unique to the Columbus area and to welcome this modality into our space.

At Nu Wave, the table is moved to the floor as Jessica utilizes the straps to leverage her weight through the hips and lower body to provide this unique style of bodywork that feels like you are being steam rolled 🤤

Red tongue tip in TCM 👅

In Chinese medicine, the tip of the tongue reflects the Heart and Shen—our emotional state, mental activity, and nervous system regulation.

When the tongue tip appears red, it often suggests Heart heat or nervous system overstimulation. This doesn’t automatically mean something is “wrong,” but it can indicate the body is under increased internal stress.

This pattern may show up with:
• anxiety or inner restlessness
• difficulty falling or staying asleep
• vivid dreams or feeling unrefreshed
• palpitations or chest tightness
• racing thoughts, overthinking, or emotional sensitivity
• feeling “wired but tired”

In TCM, the tongue is always viewed in context alongside the pulse, digestion, sleep, menstrual patterns, and emotional stressors.

Supportive TCM approaches may focus on calming the Shen, regulating the nervous system, and gently clearing Heat during acupuncture sessions. Sometimes I will recommend Hibiscus tea - a cooling, slightly sour herbal tea used to help clear heart heat and soothe tension.

Tongue diagnosis is a great way to to empower your health if you know what to look for 🫶

Every detail of this space is intentional…
Because healing doesn’t start with the actual treatment — it starts with how safe, supported, and relaxed your body feels from the moment you walk in.

The clinic and treatment rooms were designed to help your nervous system soften, your breath slow, and your body shift out of fight-or-flight before the treatment even begins.

This treatment room is grounded in soft green, a color associated with the heart center — supporting calm, emotional balance, and a sense of safety in the body. In acupuncture, when the heart and nervous system are supported, the entire body is able to regulate and heal more deeply.

Amenities during sessions include:
• Relaxing spa music
• Heated treatment table
• TDP mineral lamp over the feet
• Red light therapy lamp over the abdomen/low back
• Lavender eye pillow (if desired)
• Soft, calming lighting

✨ Healing begins the moment you exhale, let go, and release.

Side effects may include deep relaxation, feeling floaty, being on a cloud after, motivation, grounded calm, feeling heavy, deep sleep, or twitches 🥰

✨ Not all fatigue is the same in TCM.
If you’re exhausted but your labs are “normal,” your body may be speaking a different language.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fatigue shows up in patterns, not just as low energy. Here are 5 common types:
🌿 Qi Deficiency – tired after small tasks, low motivation, shortness of breath
🔥 Yang Deficiency – deep exhaustion, cold hands and feet, worse in the morning
💧 Damp Fatigue – heavy body, brain fog, bloating, worse after eating
🩸 Blood Deficiency – fatigue with anxiety, poor sleep, hair loss, dizziness
🌊 Yin Deficiency – wired but tired, night sweats, dry skin, restless sleep

Each type needs a different approach—different foods, habits, acupuncture treatment, and herbal strategies.

Acupuncture is often helpful in the final weeks of pregnancy to support the body’s natural labor process 🤍

In many cases, we begin preparing for labor around 37 weeks, depending on the individual. Treatments may include both manual and electro-acupuncture on points such as LI4 and SP6, which are traditionally used to help encourage uterine activity and support cervical readiness.

Each treatment plan is personalized to the patient, and timing always matters. It’s also so rewarding to see the activity of baby during sessions 💕

Qi isn’t just one thing 🌿

In Chinese medicine, Qi isn’t a single, vague concept as there are actually many different types of Qi, each with its own role and function in the body.

In acupuncture school, we study Qi in TCM theory and foundations to understand how it’s involved in every physiological process:
movement, digestion, protection, transformation, and balance. This allows us to understand the imbalances connected to certain symptoms and their relationship to the flow of Qi or the type of Qi that may not be functioning in an optimal way at that time.

When Qi is flowing and sufficient, the body knows how to regulate itself.
When Qi becomes deficient, stagnant, or rebellious, symptoms begin to appear.

Understanding the different forms of Qi helps us identify where imbalance is happening and how we can gently guide the body back into harmony.

This framework is one of the reasons Chinese medicine is so effective: it doesn’t just treat symptoms, it looks at how the body’s energy is functioning as a whole.

When you feel depleted and ungrounded, it’s usually not just “stress.”

In Chinese medicine, this often reflects
✨ Kidney deficiency
✨ Spleen qi deficiency

This point combo is a combination I use frequently with my female patients — especially those navigating irregular cycles, painful or heavy periods, amenorrhea, or fertility challenges.

When the Kidney system isn’t anchoring us or is depleted from overwork or chronic stress (ladies, we are giving too much of ourselves away to our jobs..), fertility challenges and cycle irregularities present. If the Spleen isn’t containing the blood, cycles can become irregular, include spotting, or be really heavy.

Kidney 3 (Taixi)
is the Yuan-Source point of the Kidney channel.
It nourishes Kidney Yin and Yang, supports Jing, strengthens the lumbar spine, and stabilizes the root of the menstrual cycle through the Chong and Ren vessels.

Spleen 6 (Sanyinjiao)
Is the Meeting point of the three Yin channels of the leg (Liver, Kidney and Spleen)
It tonifies Spleen qi, nourishes Blood and Yin, regulates the uterus, and helps the body hold and build what it needs for a healthy cycle.

Together, they:
• replenish foundational energy
• support Blood production and containment
• regulate the uterus
• calm and anchor the nervous system
• help you feel back in your body

If you’ve been:
• exhausted but wired
• spacey or ungrounded
• weak in your low back
• heavy in your limbs
• noticing cycle irregularities
• having trouble sleeping

This pairing is often part of the fix. 💕

And if this feels like a pattern, it may be time to support the root — not just push through it.
