was born in Virginia in 1865. By the 1890s, Brooks was living in Newark, New Jersey, working as a porter for the Pullman Palace Car Company. The first street sweeper was invented in 1849, then another one with brushes was invented in 1868. Brooks’ version improved the self-propelled front-brush sweeper. In addition, he introduced the “receiving pan” that collected the swept dirt and deposited it in the back of the sweeper. His was filed for his invention on April 29, 1895, and approved on March 17, 1896. Brooks received financial backing from two investors, and in February 1896, the Pennsylvania state government gave him a $100,000 order for street cleaners.
