What a great weekend to have a graduating class of healthcare students! This Phlebotomy class entered intending to earn their certification and each one of them succeeded! Test scores were on point, clinical skills were spectacular, and energy was there as well! You all make what we do so enjoyable!

Another Phlebotomy class for the books, but this time we're recording the fact that we had double graduates! That's right, some of our students were also Class of 2025 high school graduates! Steady Hand Phlebotomy recognizes July as Sarcoma Awareness Month 🌻💛

Sarcoma, often referred to as “the forgotten cancer” is a rare type of malignant (cancerous) tumor that develops in bone and connective tissue, such as fat, muscle, blood vessels, nerves, and the tissue that surrounds bones and joints. They form when immature bone or soft tissue cells undergo changes to their DNA and develop into cancer cells that grow in an unregulated way. The most common types of sarcoma are soft tissue sarcomas, including angiosarcomas, fibrosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, rhabdomyosarcomas, liposarcomas, and synovial sarcomas. Osteosarcomas (bone sarcomas) are the second most common type, with the least frequent type being sarcomas that develop in internal organs, such as the lungs.

Symptoms may vary depending on the tumor’s location, but can include a new lump that may or may not hurt, pain in an extremity (arm/leg) or abdomen/pelvis, trouble moving your arm or leg (a limp or limited range of motion), unexplained weight loss, and back pain. While there is no known cause, certain factors may raise the risk of developing sarcoma such as exposure to certain chemicals, radiation, lymphedema (long-term swelling in the arms/legs), and certain genetic conditions. Treatment for sarcoma often involves surgery to remove the cancer. Other treatments for sarcoma may include radiation therapy, ablation therapy, and treatment with medicines. Medicines that help treat sarcoma include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
Although there is no way to prevent sarcoma, early detection methods you can do is to keep up with your doctor appointments & complete yearly examinations. Schedule an appointment with your provider if you have a mass the size of a golf ball, whether it’s painful or not, or if you have bone pain unrelated to an injury that doesn’t get better on its own.

Interviews can be high stress, anxiety-driving situations, especially if it’s your first interview. A little practice and preparation always pays off. While you can’t know exactly what an employer will ask, here are some common interview questions along with advice on how to answer them.

Remember: always research the company and/or position you are applying for, arrive at least 10 minutes early, practice your responses to specific questions, and come ready to sell yourself.
