If you or a loved one has been impacted by a stroke or other brain injury, you may wonder how and if the brain can repair itself. The answer is yes, it can, and the process is called neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity happens in the brain throughout your lifetime as you learn new information and activities. It’s also crucial during recovery after a traumatic or non-traumatic injury to the central nervous system, including the brain and spine.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and Susan’s story is a powerful reminder that recovery after a traumatic brain injury is possible with the right rehabilitation.

After falling and fracturing her skull, Susan arrived at our Johnston, Rhode Island hospital determined to regain her independence. With the encouragement and expertise of our care team, she learned to stand, walk and confidently perform daily activities again.

Today, she’s back home with her family — and back to pursuing the goals she set before her injury, including training for a half marathon and hiking with her family.

In Susan’s own words: “The acute care hospital saved my life, but Encompass Health and the rehab here saved my soul.”

This Brain Injury Awareness Month, we honor survivors like Susan and the incredible resilience they show every day.

Cathleen had a stroke and came to our hospital for rehabilitation. She was delightful and always in high spirits, and it was a pleasure to care for her. We are proud to say she made a full recovery and is doing well. Her mom, Eva Butler, was by her side throughout her journey, along with her service dog.

Trigger and Bullet, therapy dogs from Canines for Christ, visited Cathleen every week. They were wonderful companions who helped her during recovery.

Thank you to everyone who supported Cathleen through this journey.
