Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today we remember and honor the lives of trangsender, non-binary, and gender non conforming people who lost their lives to targeted discrimination, abuse or violence for simply existing.
is holding a Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil today at Bo Diddley Plaza from 7pm-9:30pm, feel free to come out and show respect and remember the trans, non-binary, and gender non conforming individuals that have lost their lives in our community.
