University of Florida Health Cancer Center

University of Florida Health Cancer Center As an academic health center, our clinician-scientists participate in cutting-edge research and clinical trials.

The National Cancer Institute-designated UF Health Cancer Center blends comprehensive patient care and innovative research in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. The University of Florida Health Cancer Center offers a wide range of diagnostic, treatment and after-care services for all types of adult and children’s cancer. Each patient is treated according to a unique plan customized by

a team of medical professionals, scientists and educators for the specific type of cancer, its stage, the patient’s needs and overall health. One of the great benefits of receiving cancer care at an academic health center like UF Health is patient access to advanced medical treatment and the latest in research. The multidisciplinary membership of the UF Health Cancer Center is its strength. The center develops and maintains a membership program composed of more than 350 researchers and clinicians at UF and UF Health Shands Hospital to organize, facilitate, promote and support the growth and enrichment of a full spectrum of cancer research. Members are drawn from throughout the University of Florida, including six colleges within the Health Science Center — Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions and Veterinary Medicine —to collaborate on original scientific research and make advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. In 2013, UF Health and Orlando Health joined programs to form the UF Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health, establishing one of the state’s largest, most comprehensive cancer programs.

After fighting prostate cancer for five years, Steve Hurm was informed of the terrifying news that he may only have two years to live. Before his diagnosis, he was active and had no symptoms.

After years of androgen deprivation therapy and chemotherapy, the cancer continued to spread. But when UF Health adopted the new radiopharmaceutical technology, Steve decided to give it a chance. This would change the trajectory of his life.

He was referred to Dr. Kathryn Hitchcock and began the treatment. After six rounds of radiopharmaceutical treatment, his PET scan showed no detectable cancer.

Now, Steve is able to spend time with his family and do the things he loves, like golfing and photography. This second chance gave him a new outlook on life, leading him to appreciate every day and every moment.
