Allie Redshaw lost her hand in a freak accident while she was working as a chef in a Charlottesville restaurant. She had just found out she was pregnant.

The months afterward were really hard. But Allie credits her orthopedic surgeon, Bobby Chhabra, MD and her home health and physical therapy teams for ensuring that she and her daughter didn't just survive, they thrived. After her daughter was born, Allie got her yoga teacher certification, began adaptive rock climbing, and is starting a nonprofit with two other amputees.

Working from home used to feel like a snow day. Rare, but when you had a chance to sit in the comfort of your house, it was a treat. Since the pandemic, more people are now enjoying a home office — either full-time or on a hybrid schedule.

But sometimes the comfort of home isn’t the best for working. It can cause aches and pains you didn’t notice before. Prolonged sitting at a computer increases your risk of musculoskeletal and nerve pain.

💼 We asked physical therapist Stacy Hite to explain why working from home is causing issues and how to prevent injuries: https://bit.ly/4niR8nP

A large, international clinical trial has found that an investigational drug significantly reduces hot flashes and night sweats for post-menopausal women.

Recipients of elinzanetant saw a more than 73% reduction in the frequency and severity of “vasomotor symptoms” – hot flashes and night sweats – by the third month. The trial also found secondary benefits like a reduction in sleep disturbances and overall improvements in reported quality of life.

Many of us hit middle age and start to notice changes. Our joints ache, our energy levels take a dive, and we take extra notice when we leave our credit card at home or forget the name of a friend’s cat. To a certain extent, we’re aware that aging will happen. But we don’t always know what’s normal wear and tear vs. a sign of serious disease.

So, we wonder: is this forgetfulness a sign of aging or the start of dementia?

💭 We spoke to expert geriatrician Laurie Archbald-Pannone, MD to break down what’s normal and what’s not: https://bit.ly/4mgyMm3

Blood clots that form in the lower half of the body can put people at risk for pulmonary embolism or even death. When the traditional method of treatment for blood clots–blood thinning agents–cannot be used, physicians look to other treatments. We want you to know there are other options for this serious condition. IVC filter placement and removal is an alternative, minimally invasive method of minimizing the risk of blood clots.

IVC Filters are small metal devices that can prevent blood clots in the lower body from traveling up the body and blocking blood flow to the lungs or heart.

Varicose veins are more than just an eyesore. Sometimes they hurt and make everyday life uncomfortable. Have you, or someone you know, had a sore on their foot that just would not go away? Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) is the result of narrowing arteries in the leg, which restricts blood flow to your extremities. You may first notice CLI as pain in the foot or an ulceration on the toe. Interventional radiologists perform a minimally invasive procedure to treat CLI called angioplasty.

Article reviewed by Luke Wilkins, MD and John Angle, MD.

The vascular system (also called the circulatory system) is a network of vessels carrying blood throughout the body, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen and removing waste material. Sometimes these vessels are not formed normally (malformed), are connected abnormally, or are not formed at all. This condition is a Congenital Vascular Malformation and affects the body in many ways. At UVA Interventional Radiology, we provide treatment for a variety of vascular malformations.

When the weather is warmer and you wear shorts, you want to look and feel your best with smooth, unblemished legs. Blood clots are a common health issue that require immediate medical attention. A blood clot that blocks or slows blood flow to the brain can lead to stroke. Thanks to modern imaging technology, a new, minimally invasive procedure has been developed to remove clots from the brain and other parts of the body: mechanical thrombectomy.

Mechanical Thrombectomy is a type of minimally invasive, image-guided procedure where an interventional radiologist removes a clot from a patient’s artery.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common liver cancers and is often caused by long-term damage or scarring of the liver (liver cirrhosis). It is estimated to be responsible for 500,000 deaths every year. For various reasons, including the patient's overall health, sometimes HCC cannot be treated with surgery. When HCC is inoperable, it continues to cause symptoms and progress as a disease. At UVA Interventional Radiology, we want you to know about radioembolization—a minimally invasive procedure that can offer hope to people who have inoperable liver cancer.
