Great question I was asked today.
In terms of sciatic nerve, pain can be debilitating while numbness can be a nuisance. However, in terms of seriousness, the numbness could be a sign of more advanced nerve damage.
There is even a third thing that may be worst of all, and that is loss of function.

This is why symptoms are important, but are not always the best indicator of the seriousness of a problem. Numbness and foot drop may not be as uncomfortable as shooting pain down the leg, but a neurosurgeon often considers the former more of a surgical candidate than the latter.
This is also why we always want to get problems corrected earlier in the pain process, and never get to the nerve damage that causes numbness, tingling, or loss of function.
