Keep Your Cool
The days are getting longer and no matter where you are I’m sure you have noticed that it’s starting to warm- up. We are finally able to enjoy the outdoor activities we love. It is also a good time to remember to increase our fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Signs of dehydration include infrequent urination, headaches, bad breath, dry skin, cracked lips and muscle cramps.
Most people don’t realize that even minor dehydration can make you feel tired and irritable. When fluid intake becomes too low concentration, brain fog, and constipation become chronic. The increase of kidney stones, kidney disease, urinary tract infections and bladder cancer increases. Extreme dehydration can lead to heatstroke and death. Staying hydrated helps our core to stay cool and plays a role in regulating blood pressure.
Here are a few tips to help you stay hydrated in the heat:
1. Drink about 64 fluid ounces of water daily. You can achieve this by drinking eight 8 ounces, five 12 ounces or four 16 oz glasses.
2. Small pieces of fruit help to add flavor to plain water and increase its nutritional value as well.
3. Caffeinated energy drinks may contain ingredients that increase urine production and contribute to dehydration. Caffeinated coffee and tea are safe to drink if consumed in small amounts. No more than 750 milligrams a day, (that’s 3 cups).
4. Alcoholic beverages consumed in large amounts increases urine output and can cause dehydration.
5. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables during hot weather not only helps to hydrate but provides the body with phytonutrients, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
