Trauma and addiction researcher Gabor Maté says that not all trauma victims are addicts, but all addicts are trauma victims.
Without a doubt, that has been what I have witnessed. I have seen the heartbreak as survivors blame themselves, as they carry shame for something that wasn’t their fault. They try to find anything to numb the pain that they are going through.
And it’s so easy for outsiders to pass judgement. To say how they would handle it if it happened to them. But they don’t see the child who was suddenly yanked out of the world of princess/superhero posters. Or the teenager that went out with friends they trusted. The adult taken advantage of by their own spouse. And so many other life altering betrayals.
Recovery is possible. And so worth it. While taking accountability for your actions is part of it, another part is not blaming yourself for the actions of others- especially when they betray you in such a horrible way.
If you are struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You have nothing to be ashamed of. And anyone who would judge you isn’t someone worth knowing anyway.
A few paths in life she could take
But not one of them I could blame
Finding every way to numb
Finding ways to overcome
I pray that God will right that wrong
And she'll find a way to carry on
'Cause you ain't the hell that you've been through
You're more than what's been done to you
