Stigma is a version of shaming in my view. If a person is grappling with the impacts of addiction, it seems to me that the 1st job of any caregiver is to demonstrate COMPASSION, not contempt. This is a chronic disease frequently treated as acute. This has to change right here & right now!

Opioid deaths play 2nd fiddle to COVID-19. Despite increases in the former, little emphasis on overdoses gets the attention warranted.

COVID-19 has ravaged seniors who are ill-prepared to do much about their situation. They are dying at a rate 8.6x the rest of the population over 75. If you or someone you care about is in a facility - demand accountability. Ensure accurate reporting & attention to care is foremost in their "business practices." If the current trend continues, 90,000 people currently in nursing homes will pass away as a result.

Non-medical use of both opioids and sedatives increases risk of overdose or accident. While that's a widespread conclusion - what to do about it remains the issue. Results of the present study highlight the importance of prescription monitoring, further research into gender-informed treatments, and implementation of treatments for substance use and co-occurring symptoms.

Over half of the sample attained opioids through their own prescription, and 47.2% of patients with co-occurring sedative use disorder attained sedatives by prescription.
