Worldwide, Scientific Evidence of Qigong's Benefits

Medical professionals and scientists are studying the healing effects of Qigong practice. This article called "Qigong: May The Life Force Be With You" shares more about research into the benefits of Qigong:

"One of the largest studies ever conducted on the benefits of meditative movements spanned 13 countries. Carefully selected participants exhibited a variety of diseases or risk factors of illness.

These included arthritis, heart disease/hypertension, osteoporosis, depression, and Parkinson's disease, among others. By the study's conclusion, scientists pinpointed a few categories in which the practice of Qi Gong yielded encouraging benefits: cardiopulmonary dysfunction, balance/falls risk, immune response, bone loss, and overall quality of life.

In interpreting these findings, a perceptive personal trainer might notice the absence of resistance training among typical Qi Gong movements.

How, then, do we explain improvements in bone density along with fewer incidence of fractures? Tai Chi devotees, too, experienced this same outcome.

While the precise methodology still eludes scientists, trainers can feel comfortable offering this good news as one more option for elderly, frail, and perhaps, unmotivated clients. Explaining that bone loss can improve even in the absence of lifting moderate weight loads, we help cultivate self-efficacy in our older sedentary participants. In fact, many of the bodily poses in Qigong work well even from a seated position."

Hi everyone…
Due to the highly contagious nature of Covid-19’s Omicron variant, GCA is still not taking new Community Acupuncture patients. We are continuing to require masks and other safety precautions at the office, including social distancing. This means that, in spite of HEPA filtration and ionizer/UV air treatment in our ventilation system, we are not offering group treatments at this time. If you would like to schedule acupuncture or herbal treatment privately with Jennifer Downey, AP, you are welcome to do so!

We would like to extend our gratitude to all of our patients and friends who have hung in there with us over the past two years. Warm wishes to all of you for a healthy 2022.

We have installed a UV light with an Ionizer in our HVAC system, and we run HEPA filters in every room all day long. But so long as the risk of COVID-19 infection in Alachua County remains high, we will not be resuming Community-style clinic treatments, and we are continuing to require masking, temperature checks, and other infection prevention protocols in our office. Please understand that this is for your protection, as well as for ours. We are so looking forward to the day when the infection risk is "Low" and we can go back to offering affordable acupuncture treatment in a group setting!

All pandemic long, scientists brawled over how the virus spreads. Droplets! No, aerosols! At the heart of the fight was a teensy error with huge consequences.

COVID-19/Corona Virus update for Gainesville Community Acupuncture

GCA will be operating on a reduced schedule this week. For the health of our patients and staff, we ask that anyone who is coughing, has a fever, or shortness of breath, or has had close exposure to anyone with these symptoms, please do not come in. We will be happy to support your wellness with herbal formulas you can take at home. Our 24-hour cancellation policy is waived for the time being, and we trust you to self-quarantine and inform the appropriate health department authorities if you present with a dry cough, fever or sore throat and/or believe you've been exposed to COVID-19.
Staying at least six feet away from other people (“social distancing”) lessens your chances of catching COVID-19. However, at this point every single one of us needs to realize we could possibly be infected and to behave as such. Therefore, after Thursday, March 19th, our clinic will be closed at least until April 1st, in accordance with local and national “15 Days to Slow the Spread” guidelines.
Jenn will be available for telemedicine appointments to prescribe herbal formulas as needed; both custom and pre-prepared formulas can be drop-shipped to you. Please contact her if you would like to make use of this service, particularly if you feel you are coming down with something, want immune support, or are experiencing symptoms. Herbs work, and have been shown to be particularly effective in treating COVID-19 (amongst many other health imbalances) in China and here in the United States.
We encourage you to enjoy sunshine and fresh air, and make the best of this unexpected down-time to reset, rejuvenate, and take good care of yourselves and your families. That’s what we’ll be doing!
Thank you for understanding and working together to protect our community. We are heartily grateful for our amazing patients and staff!

With love and in health,
Jenn Downey, AP, Dipl. OM

“Battlefield Acupuncture” was adopted in the USA in the early 1970s as part of addiction treatment programs to help reduce the duration and severity of cravings and withdrawal symptoms. But acupuncture can also treat pain and promote healing, thus reducing or eliminating the need for opioid use.

Doctors and patients are constantly searching for new alternatives to treat chronic pain. Vanderbilt Medical Center is even looking at ancient ways, like acupuncture. For Elizabeth Cappadona, living with chronic pain has been her reality since she was ten-years-old. “I had a bone tumor and a b...
